When I use seamless images, they look really ugly. Like if I have a field of grass, you can see all the individual "tiles". Is there anyway to make an image, like grass for starters, perfectly seamless as in you can't see the individual pictures?

It's possible for side scrolling, but is it possible for above view?

when you make a seamless tile and you see the individual tiles, then you've failed as an artist

The reason you see the tiles, is because your brain notice a pattern, like a big stone or highlight.

The cure: Redraw the tile/image and make sure you don't accidently add a pattern.

Here's a pic from tsugumo's website:

It's a screenshot of final fantasy 3. You can cleary see a pattern thanks to that single stone. Now try finding the pattern if you make it darker.

The same applies for textures, if the user can see a pattern it will irretate him.

I didn't make the images, but it said they were seamless on a website.

Thanks for the help.

Then the website lied. Use texture maker. It makes them seemless.

well the texture maybe seamless but you may need to run a high pass filter so it doesnt look all bumped

I need some way to get a grass image that doesn't look like there is more than one tile or it when there really is. In other words, not having something that is a give away to the tiles.

umm, that is what seamless means. If you see individual tiles, then its not seamless.

All three has patterns in them:

1: Top-right dark spot
2: Center highlight
3: Middle-left small highlight (stone)

It is possible - you just have to be a skilled 2D artist, working on something a little better than paint to change those images into perfect seamlessss images.

no, if you do it carefully, you can avoid patterns.

Don't know how helpful this is - but actually going out with a digital camera and making your own is easier than making do with textures on the internet. Tiling your textures is something that categorically should NEVER EVER be done automaticall, it's a slow manual process, but that's why people charge for the good seamless textures.

If you wanna try making your own, here's a little guide...

1. Using PaintshopPro or Photoshop, load in your photo.
2. Make sure you have a square section, does'nt matter if it's not perfect, and don't worry about the size - you should always work in high res.
3. Now, with your texture ready to be made seamless, select the top half of the image, and flip it. Now, invert the selection so the opposite half is selected and flip that too. This has made the top and bottom section seamless, and the middle part a mess.
4. Using whatever tools work, you have to take that middle mess and make it blend nicely. The clone brush is great, but sometimes it's good to cut out pieces and rotate or scale them, just try and get the middle mess dealt with.
5. Now select the left hand half of your texture, and mirror it, invert the selection, and mirror the opposite half. This has made the left and right section seamless.
6. I'm sure you'll see what you have to do now, just keep repeating these steps until you have a nice seamless texture that's all your own.
7. That's it, just resize to 512x512 (or whatever) and save it.

People should'nt be afraid to try this stuff out - making seamless textures is far easier than I thought it would be, just try to hide the high contrast shapes as best you can, and try not to blur anything as that causes subtle patterns - especially at the edges.

One thing though - never trust your own judgement about your own work - if your looking for patterns in your ground textures you'll find them every time - the best bet is to break it up with other texture layers (like with the terrain plugins colour texture) - but also get someone elses honest opinion, maybe hint that they should say if they see an obvious pattern. Maybe an older sibling who'll realise your asking for an honest opinion and not BS you.
