Hey Bolt, really like how this game looks and plays. Was wondering how you do your in-game GUI. From the looks of it, you've got a bunch of images you use, which leads me to think you have to hard code in the ranges for selections. I've tried doing that, and it really slows down my progs. What's your secret?

High quality models and graphics, low prices. Graphics for the rest of us.

Thanks JeBuS. I use a few 3D plains that are textured and placed in front of the camera and locked. You are right about the ranges for selections. I just check the mouse position, and see where it is. Here is part of my menu code for you to see:

This code is run when the mouse is clicked and it is found to be on the top menu of the screen...

That is probably a little confusing with all those variables in it, sorry. But you should be able to get the hang of it. I did just what you thought, I didn't experience any noticable slowdown...maybe you are checking the ranges multiple times per loop? That is all I can think of...it shouldn't be slow.

It's ok Bolt, I just saw the Credits section and umm didn't see Paul, Paul R. or CPU or any credits for special effects, but then again maby i'm just blind... But if/when you put my name in just put in Paul Rohde, for smoke textures and BETA testing and I'll be as hapy as could be...

Keep it up!

In the past few days I've just returned from Europe (back in the US now) after getting married, and all I've done has played this game. There haven't been any crashes or program running problems. One time I managed to hit a wrong button and the game paused and started rotating in a circle. A click of the mouse cured that.

This game keeps me playing and addicted more then Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, and that even has naked computer chicks, so this says a lot.

I think if Bolt had another 3-6 months of updates, extra items and objects this game would sell like ice cream on a hot day.

Keep up the good work!

Wow, thanks Torrey! And congratulations on getting married!

About the game rotating in a circle: that happens when there are a whole bunch of explosions and then the camera goes into a matrix style 360 view of it, you can turn it off in the options menu.

Yeah, one thing I really have to work on before selling is the Arena. It needs some more features...

Does anybody have any suggestions for things that would make the arena more interesting or fun?

hmm... power surges, that could make things REAL intersting... but realy i'm haveing a hard time envisioning what you want the areana to be, i personaly think it would be cool if there were like pillars in various positions(that you could hide behind) a "radar" would be nice, POWERUPS would be very nice, say like bombs or somthing that you could lay, speed boosts, power boosts, aim boosts, secondary weapons: an "anti-virus"(would make the robot be temporaraly on your side ) maby some sort of detonation weapons(like rockets - except maby some sort of ion propeled electrical explosion device ) but yeah, make the areana more than just a flat plain with spiky edges, pits, pillars, different areans(with there own hazards), if you want to get some ideas that might be abled to be scaled down to fit your areana catagory check out http://www.omf.com/previews/arenas/index.html for some REALY cool areana decriptions, very intulectualy stimulating for areana construction...

well thats my rambling two cents on it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Yeah, I guess the arena needs to be totally redone. But first I need to get Milkshape working again, I lost my keycode and I have a new computer, I need to email the guys and get my keycode again...

It would be a lot cooler if there were different arenas, I guess I will do that. And pits would be cool too. I think I will add in some secondary weapons, that would be awesome.

I can do all this stuff, but the hardest part is going to be creating AI that collects items, hides, and avoids pits. Dang, that is going to be annoying...

Hey, isnt the idea that they can accidently run into pits anyway? . As long as they dont reappear there I would say its fine.

Good point...hey, I have an idea. What if the viruses were all kind of stupid, but there were just more of them, so it was harder. And then there could be pits and flames that you would try to lead them into, but the only thing that could destroy them would be your shooting them. And I could still add extra weapons, grenades, traps, etc... What do you think? Although it may seem as if I am just too lazy to program good AI...hopefully no one will notice.

I was playing the game (really enjoying myself to ) but then when my units tried to attack a ring or some unit like that, the game crashed. Hopefully you can figure that bug out because i would like to purchase this game when it becomes commercial

@Bolt - How bout this (trying to keep with the general mood of the game) what if the arena had hazards (pits, fire blasts, electric shocks, chainsaws, spikes, etc...) and the virus robots would start at one end and you would start at the other, the virus robots would have some some different modes
(a) attack - charges you, doesn't care about pits, hazards or other things.
(b) repair - hides, trys to get away from you and recharge
(c) rome - randomly moves around until it gets someone in its "Sight" range
(d) (optional) collect - heads for the nearest powerup

those are just some AI ideas - individualy they wouldn't be that hare to code me thinks. But also i was thinking it might be cool if there was a "spawn factory" that whenever a virus died it would come back at half strength, but if you destroyed the factory it would disable the respawning. Another way my wandering mind brings me - it would be cool if there were switches that could be turned on and off - they could activate or deactivate hazards - forcefields, uncover pits or close them etc... but this is probably going WAY beyond what your willing to do for firewall. But please - no more simple rectangular - flat - boring arenas... but of course I didn't say the areana was boring...

@xXMasonXx: Wow, that is really bad. Does the game just crash to Windows with no error message? Or is there are runtime error? Or a severe exception?

Has anybody else experienced the same problem as xXMasonXx?

@CPU: Those are really cool suggestions, thank you. I should be able to get Milkshape working again soon, then I can make the cool models for force fields and hazards and stuff. I think I will release a new demo really soon though, before I remake the arena. I really like all of your ideas, I wish I had thought of them I think Firewall has drained my imagination

Some people have been suggesting that I play the music through the entire game, including the battle. What do all of you think about music during the battle?

There are a few problems:
-If I load all the music right away and keep it in memory, I find that I get more severe exceptions, most likely due to a lack of memory
-Loading large sounds (some of the music is > 1MB) can be quite slow, so I can't do it midgame...

So I don't know exactly how I would do it, because I don't really want to loop the same music over and over during the battle. Unless it is a little lower quality and longer and not so repetitive. Yeah, that might work.

I am done with Firewall v3.33, you can download it from the site now:

http://www.freewebs.com/boltsoftware

Updates:
-Put your own music in my dropping mp3 files into the Data\Music folder. They will not play during battle yet though...
-Put your hackers into aggressive mode and they will work faster by hacking only enemy posts that control bytes of memory
-The loading bar moves much smoother now. However, it does wobble...I am still working on fixing that...

Check it out and tell me what you like and don't like about it. Sorry it took so long, but I have been buys with finals. I am almost done now, so I will be able to work on it more pretty soon...

It is for the arena, you will hide behind the components and use them for cover when fighting. I think I will make the robots about the size of one of those capacitors...that should work well.

@ CPU: I sent out an email with the link for the new beta...I am pretty sure you were on the list. Just download it from the usual address, the file is updated. The password is the same as usual also.

I am having a little trouble with the arena. The model has multiple textures, and I exported it as a .3ds file from Milkshape. I tried to import it, and it works just fine, all textures intact. However, when I try to load it into DB there are no textures The textures are in the same folder as the model, do they need to be .bmps? Right now they are .jpgs. I really want this to work...

Great game, very easy to pick up. I got a strategy after my third game

@ Benjamin: The problem is, there are multiple texture files...I use that command all the time for my other objects, but they only have one texture for the entire object

@ Mantta Claus (or...Mattman?): Error 98...I'll have to take a look into that. I did find the source of the error 103 yesterday, it is fixed now (but I will not upload again yet, sorry)

Actually, I think I may have found out why the textures are not loading. None of them are square or multiples of two...I am going to resize them all and see if that fixes it.

@Bolt: I dug up the old e-mail you sent me, didn't see a new one, but when I wen't to the download location it said that the page could not be displayed, and also (I'm not sure why) but your website is blocked by our internet server #^$%#&**$^#5&$^!!!!! so i'm kinda between a rock and a hardplace, you can probably e-mail the demo to my e-mail address it should be able to handel it... well I'll hope to hear from you soon and Merry Christmas to you .

EDIT
I'm not sure but I don't know if DBC supports multitexturing on one object, you might have to simply split the model up or what you could also do is make one huge texture with all the sub textures tacked around the edges of the main circut boad texture, it's just a thought but it would require re-texturing the entire model and I'm not sure you'd want to do that...

Okay, I sent you a new email with the link. But someone notified me of an error upon loading mission 3, so...

Well, I did what you suggested (before I even read your post ), I split up the model into each part that had a different texture. It works fine, and I finally got the collision zones set up correctly, yippee! I am on a different computer right now, otherwise I would show a screenshot of the new arena, it's awesome! I will post one in a couple days, once I get some powerups done.

Well, back to work (if I can stop playing NFS...)

Okay, I have got the model loaded, added in a power up thing in the middle, and got all of the collision working. I have also added some AI to the new arena to accomodate for the obstacles. It is not very good, but works pretty well sometimes. At least it is more fun than the original arena. Here are some screenshots of the new arena:

Thanks Ben. You mean you want to move your units? Right click to select them, then you can left click somewhere on your territory to move them there. Or do you want to make them walk to somewhere? You can't do that right now, as you said...but you can make Wreckers target a specific robot. Select them, then right click on an enemy robot for your Wreckers to attack it.

Anyway, I worked on the game a lot last night (I was working on it at midnight last night...I'm pathetic...). I got some powerup stuff started, there are things that float around, you can pick them up to get a temporary boost of power, speed, shield, or charge. It is pretty cool. Now I will make a power up that gives you a random special or does something else: Mines, EM pulse, dual shot, or it gives you a bug or explodes on impact, randomly.

Hopefully I will have a new demo ready in a few weeks when I go back to college. Then I can upload it.

Another bug that I fixed: the game wasn't saving arena robot selections, I finally found out why...

Ahh... so that's the bug I've been hitting my head over the computer for that I was about to post about...

but anyways, it sounds like you game is realy coming along, only one more thing I'd like to put my two cents into about the arena: I think that it would be kinda cool if you could jump, high enough so you have a chance to avoid a blast but not so high as to give the player the feeling that he has the ability to fly, just an idea though...

The arena's starting to shape up reeeaaaall nice me thinks...

Well, I have been on a Firewall spree the last couple days, so I am actually getting stuff done now. There are not so many distractions at home as there were in college...

CPU, thanks for the input. Actually, jumping would be pretty cool, I never even thought of that...but I think I will make it a "vertical thrust" type of thing , robots usually don't jump...

I am getting all of the powerup stuff figured out and here is what is planned, and about 1/4 done being implemented:
-There are little glowing balls that move around the arena and bounce off all of the walls and objects
-They are five different colours:
-Blue: temporary shield enhancement, wears off gradually
-Green: temporary power enhancement, wears off gradually
-Red: temporary charge enhancement (shoot faster), wears of gradually
-Yellow: temporary speed enhancement, wears of gradually
-White: random powerup, one of the following (right click to activate):
-Deflector shield: deflects enemy ammo back at them, lasts 30 seconds
-Sonic wave: a pulse that you shoot and it spins any robots that it hits, making them lose control for a few seconds, useable once
-Mines: drop them and they will explode when someone runs into them, you get 3 mines
-EM Pulse: a large pulse that temporarily deactivates all robots in the vicinity, useable once
-Dual Shot: fires two shots at once, useable ten times

And a couple other things about the arena that I have done:
-The control is much better, you can turn and aim faster, and the camera smoothly moves then you switch between robots, it is pretty cool looking
-I am leaving in a shield->power converting thing in, it is on the battery on the motherboard. There is no more power->shield converter. It wasn't too useful anyway.
-I am making a cool radar, I don't think it will be too hard. It should be done tomorrow.

Just as a side note: I actually have fun when testing out the arena now...

I've just had a brief opportunity this evening to play Firewall again after a long 5 month absence. The 5 month absence was caused by my putting in a lot of work into my ongoing project. I have to say playing the latest version of Firewall was a bit like meeting an old friend again - an absolute pleasure.

All the new features are excellent. Total improvement in every conceivable aspect of the game.

Bolt, you continue to act as a pathfinder for the rest of us to follow and as a quality mark for us to try and match. Well done sir!

I just wish I could spend more time playing the latest version. Sadly I have to restrain myself and go back to my own project, otherwise it'll never see the light of day by my self-appointed deadline.

Thanks everyone. Wow, I never thought that I could ever make anything that people actually liked so much. Man, I can't wait to finish this thing.

DLS: I started to download the music when I was connected to a fast connection, but I got kicked off. I am on 19.2kbs, so it would take too long. I'll start downloading right now, I'll let you know if I get finished. I really want to hear it though.

Well, I've been working on the new arena for about 8 hours a day the past couple days, and I am actually getting a lot done. I have added to the GUI in the arena and am almost done with all the powerups. I also have the radar done. Here is a screenshot:

I think it looks pretty cool, and the powerups that work right now are really cool.

I have an idea that integrates the power surge idea. How about if you shoot a capacitor, it discharges and shocks everyone around it? I could also add random power surges that occur at random points on the map and damage shields. If I added lightning effects it would look really awesome...

Thank for all of your ideas, I really appreciate everyone's help and comments!

I don't know why these idea's keep popping into my head but i got an idea for the power-surge hazard, basicly, you figure out where all the "wires" are (the areas where the texture shows metal band) and when a power surge happens, all along it you use that zapping animation along it for half a second, and anyone near the wires gets an "arc" shock (basicly what happens when you short the two ends of a charged capacator together), well that might be what you've already though of but i thought i might just add my two cents...

Keep it up!

Yeah, that is sort of what I had in mind, but it is a good idea to record the positions of the wires on the motherboard so that the arcs only happen across them, thanks again! I know why you keep coming up with ideas...Firewall is so amazing that it has influenced the neural networks of your brain, boosting your creativity

@DLS: I just downloaded the music, and it is really awesome! It is defenitely going in Firewall, probably in the battle part. It is really good, thanks again! I am putting you in the credits now
