That does make a game fun.. I quite liked Carmageddon for that.. Its worlds were often massive for a game of its era!

Another thing that can make a game fun for a long time is its "mod-a-bility".. I dont think Half Life 1 would be as popular as it is now if it wasn't for Counterstrike, DoD, etc..

There are games like that. GTA makes you(I think) do all the missions and doesn't give you many options when doing missions(I think). (I don't have GTA and last time I played it, I remember that you had to go to a certain telephone and do a mission).
Most open-ended games are(probably) RPGs and MMORPGs.
Games that let you chose a path(in the game) are fun.

I like any computer game where you can play against another human in real time.

Like just about any 2 player ATARI 2600 cart.

Anybody remember the 8-bit classic M.U.L.E.? (EA 1984)

How about the 16-bit GRIDIRON? (Bethesda Softworks 1986) The best 2D realtime football simulation ever!

for truly open ended look at elite - wasted many days of my life on that - but enjoyed every minute. Apparently they're making another one maybe multiplayer. All new space sims are compared to elite and rarely has another game got close.

I personally like to get enveloped within the game such as in the FF series where you end up caring a little about what happens.
I also like mindless fun so san anreas for me at the minute and kotor2 looks pretty good at the mo.

I'm with Van B about programmers these days - everything is so inefficient. C64s and Spectrums - you had to be able to justify every single byte in agame.
