Chances are you haven't heard of it, but for one and a half years there's been a DarkBASIC IRC chat room. It's a friendly place that almost always has a few active members (peaks around thirty). Founded by Mnemonix, the channel is run by him and Jimmy; lagmaster is the friendly neighborhood IRC operator, and a few devoted regulars make up our friendly op squad.

To join the room, just use the Java client right here, or navigate to the Developer Network section of the TheGameCreators site and, on the left tab, mouse over 'Forums & Chat' and scroll down to the chat option; or, using an IRC client of your preference (mIRC is the most popular option), connect to the network irc.chattingaway.com at port 6667 and join the room #darkbasic.

Most of the time DarkBASIC isn't the topic, although almost all of the regulars use some TGC product. Discussion ranges from personal issues (generally EricT's, because he has a lot of them) to programming to technical support to, of course, DarkBASIC specifically. If you need DarkBASIC help there will almost always be someone there to help you out-- just ask nicely.

Fair Warning: While operators are there to put out flamewars and kick spammers, the chatroom is a fairly unmoderated medium. Generally speaking, pretty much anything goes including strong profanity, so if this bothers you please don't join.

The things we DON'T allow are political or religious debate or argument of any kind, warez discussion, or extreme vulgarity (if an op warns you, take the hint).

Similarly, don't spam, nag, or whine or you might get kicked or, at most, banned. Bans rarely last for more than a few days, so if you get in trouble, try dropping by at a later time when you're feeling calmer .

And if you're a known plagarist or troll on the forum, don't expect a warm reception... if you're not, don't worry, we are actually quite friendly.

Here are a few basic commands to help you find your way around IRC:

/me SOMETHING: Emote, for example (/me waves becomes Mouse waves when sent to the room)
/ignore SOMEONE: Use this to ignore someone if they're bothering you. If you want to un-ignore someone, type /ignore SOMEONE none.

Similarly we've got a friendly bot Tumbleweed who you can use to perform Google searches--

!google something to search for
!image something to search for

And he'll return the address of the first result. Rather handy.

For those of you knowledgable of IRC, the network offers custom services bots, custom VHosts, active IRCop help, and a friendly atmosphere. There are also alternate game design and chat rooms with slightly different atmospheres, though #darkbasic is the busiest.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Yeah, and if you hear me warning you, that means your off the deep end.

You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. He looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't **** around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that god was having trouble with.

Don't forget to drop by #coding We discuss ANYTHING related to programming.

Anyway, if you don't feel like downloading a client, you can use the MetaIRC web client on [href]www.chattingaway.com[/href]. Alternately, you can use the one I just set up on my website, [href]www.knova.net/chat.php[/href].

Just so you know, #darkbasic users are ready and willing to help with almost any problem, programming or not. At the moment, we are talking about MP3 players. Something to keep in mind.

i'm the unlucky person giving you lot 2 of the so many servers on that network. (stable too i might add)

anyway, i can offer irc related help to anyone who is on it. if you have any irc related question pop into #help, either me or some other oper will help you.

since we have a lot more features we can please you with, they can be setup asap without any fuss.

for example, if you make a top notch game in dbc/dbpro and you want a support room, why not create a room! i can create a custom named bot just for your channel. teach you the features that you get with running a room and more.

so... when is the next TGC Q&A?

I spoke to Mike about it a few weeks ago and he suggested just before Christmas, so probably next week sometime .

Btw. I am alive, for those IRC`ers who thought I was dead.

Innocent question: Why would you talk about your personal problems to people you've met online who you don't know at all?

Just give me a good explanation and that'll be the end of it...

Because, in my opinion, sometimes it's better to talk to someone about something that isn't involved with your problems at all, unlike your friends, your family, etc, since all they'll do is the same crap they always do, such as say "Suck it up" or say "I hope you feel better soon" or say "Dammit, stop poking me in the back of the head".

That, and we have Jimmy around to brighten anyone's mood should they be down in the dumps

Cheers,
Preston

Nothing's stopping you from ignoring people you don't like. A user block feature is coming in Apollo 3, but Rich said he probably wouldn't get back to it until 2005 (hardly far away at this point). Until then you'll just have to put up with my sense of humor

I agree that the feature's a good idea though.

use this: http://www.thegamecreators.com/?gf=irc

@moose - The link you have for the Jirc in the first post isn't right. That one leads to a client that wants to go to Coolchat (one of our old networks). So update that link to http://www.thegamecreators.com/?gf=irc
