This will surely stifle the quality of Madden in the coming years, as there will be literally no competition for EA. I am not looking forward to this as a trend in the industry

Tell that to the 1.5 million who purchased Madden 2005 in its first week of release.

I'm just saying that once you kill the competition, the product quality goes downhill.

We got the same problem over here in old Blighty.
EA spend big money getting the licenses for all the football(soccer) leagues/teams then put out a completely uselessly crap game and it goes to number 1 in the chart - 'cus they got all the official teams & 60% of Jo Public is a mighty stupid beast.
Then we get another football(soccer) game called ISS Pro Evelution and it totaly beats FIFA(EA's crappy game) in every single aspect (apart from proper teams/leagues). And 'cus only 40% of Jo Public have any sense it only goes to 2 in the charts.

I hate EA sports.

I've always wondered if EA own the rights to Cricket games, because so far their last 3 games have gone way downhill. Cricket 97 was excellent, but 2000 - 2004 were all very, very, crap.

How is this the same situation? If it was then there would be no more ISS until 2010. At least we can still buy it. Unlike Actua Soccer, which for some reason was my personal favourite. Dunno why mind, just felt better to me. If you don't count Kick Off 2 of course...

For years, EA had the only good NFL football game. This year ESPN not only made what I think was a better game, they priced it for $20 instead of Madden's normal $50. I liked just about everything in ESPN better than Madden this year. The presentation was awesome. What I liked about it more than ANYTHING else was that I figured that competition for Madden would be GREAT for BOTH games. It really made me wonder how mcuh better the two games would get from trying to out-do each other. I was looking forward to reaping those benefits. Instead of investing their money in development, EA decided to spend it on licensing. Looks like there won't be ANYTHING but roster updates for the next five years. Looks like EA won't be getting a dime off of me for the next five years. It's crap!

I'm not terribly worried about this particular move. I really can't see any innovation or originality in a game of an established game anyways-- the thing EA is having the most trouble with is IP and innovative game design, and that's something you can't licence and something there will hopefuly always be a market for.

Most of EA Sports titles were better in the Mid-Late 90s

See that's something i've noticed with the series I've played. Those that keep releasing yearly without changing eventually drivel down, and are just crap with older version being better.. but the series that changes every few years with new gameplay and such, is more than getting a facelift and remains fun.

This extends to alot of EAs titles.
Need For Speed, NBA Basketball, NHL Allstars.. these games have thier official versions, but now they also have thier underground or street versions, which while remaining similar to the originals, change enough with enough new features to make them more interesting to play.

FIFA, NHL Madden, TheSims.. While small things changes each version, you only really end up buying them to see what the new team rosters are, or what that new couch looks like. Within a week your bored of it again.

EA have companies showing them that you can break away from the formula to still create alot of cash, but at the same time these new games cannot be put out yearly like EA wants for a regular in-come.

It's a case of $12million for a game every 2years, or $8million for a game every year. Until the players start making sure that it is less work regurgitating a game, they won't stop doing it.

Even if ESPN games could still be offical NFL games, there are rumors that they would be increasing in price for next generation. Anyways this definatly sucks because I personally like the ESPN NFL games way better than Madden. I think they should take ESPN and make a NFL Street style game, but make up their own teams and players. Just like what Midway plans to do with Blitz.

Some ea sports games are pretty good, and others are crap. Rugby and Fight Night 2004 are Ea sports games and i really enjoy them. But there are crap games, Like Cricket 2000-2004 like Exeat said (I own cricket 2004 and it is really crap.)

As i said before, they only make some good sports games, the rest are crap, in whatever genre they are.

Very rarely do I enjoy an EA game. They wowed me with MOH, SSX, Batlefield 1942, and Burnout, but that was about it. They are the king of licenses and they just exploit those and it drives me nuts.

NFS 2 was the greatest, I still prefer it to the later games like Hot Pursuit, High Stakes, Underground, etc. NHL 2005 is awesome, with the exception of some minor niggles, and Tiger Woods 2005 is as good as a golf game can get. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised to see those later 2 games go downhill in the future.

Criterion Studios made Burnout 3, not EA.
EA were just publishers of Burnout3 or they bought out Criterion (don't know which), either way I don't think EA deserve recognition for creating Burnout 3.

Of course they do--- they bought out Criterion. Every entity within EA still operates on its old name. EA Tiberon makes Madden, EA Blackbox makes Need For Speed, EA Maxis makes The Sims, and now EA Criterion makes Burnout. EA purchased Criterion before Burnout 3 was released.

That's what I don't get about the new title every year thing. Why keep buying the same game with newer graphics and a tidier interface? If a game gets a decent upgrade I don't mind buying it again (dungeon keeper 1 -> 2 ), but every year? Seems a bit hilarious people just keep paying really. And there's also that it's a game of a freakin' game, where's the entertainment value in playing a sports game on a computer you could either play or watch in real life? I just don't get it-- one of those things about humanity I can't comprehend

You have more power and preform more accurate actions in games, but it's still probably funner in real life.

Well i could've, if it wasn't for this gammy knee i got after an episode involving a water cooler.
there are brief moments who wonder why even have causal (drinking) fridays.. then you realise. it's to get the injuries from inanimate objects to force you to play more computer games

I'm crap at golf in real-life, but I still like to hit a few birdies every now and then, even if it is just in a game. Additionally, it's much, much, cheaper for a lot of sports.

Well, while I don't like sports or racing games, I have friends who do, and I think that this is a bunch of bs.

However, I have no clue about what sports games are good or not, I onl own one, and that's for the SNES.

Yes, that's the one that stands out the most as it's on a black background that flashes, however, the rest of the messages are hidden on the face throughout various frames.

On a slightly more topical note, Penny Arcade is hilarious - http://www.penny-arcade.com/news.php3?date=2004-12-16 - I quote:

Quote: "I contacted EA hoping to ask them some questions regarding their recent NFL deal. I was however only able to ask one question.

Q. "How do you respond to rumors that your company is actually the devil?"

A. "EA does not comment on rumors."

-Gabe out"
