Hi all, EA still looks GO for Friday

We have decided that it will be Windows XP only. This is because there are issues with ME and 98 and we do not have time to deal with these right now. We would like to know what impact this has you, are you still 98 and ME users or is the majority now XP? Please post below.

Does it mean XP only, or XP & 2000 only?

I use XP.

I would like to know if the games created will run fine on 98/ME.

XP here.

One question though, when you say XP do you mean XP SP2? That's important because there have been many issues with SP2 and compatibility with exisiting software.

@fdecker, I've been testing on SP2 with no problems so should be fine.

That's the best news I've heard in a long time

Too bad I feel a cold coming on *cough* *cough*... guess work will have to live without me Friday

Oh and I use XP as well. I imagine a poll might be helpful, but at least this thread should ascertain what we "forum dwellers" use

jasuk, that's good news.

Lots of good news today

The info Richard posted about bitmap support between levels sealed it for me. I'm going to get myself a new laptop. I've got my eyes on a nice 17" widescreen, 1GB RAM, 3.2Ghz, 128MB ATI video, and 80GB HDD. That way I'll be able to play with FPSC while enjoying Sci-Fi Friday on TV.

Wow, I really need to get a life

Here is my opinon. Don't waste anytime with Win98 or ME. XP/2000 ALL THE WAY!! Why? They are really the best OS's out there. Windows 98 and ME are old OS's that shouldn't be supported anymore by anyone(I really have a dislike for 98/ME when I work machines with them installed on)In fact, anyone running 98/ME is probably running a slower machine anyway. I have yet to meet someone who is running 98 on anything faster than 1Ghz. In fact I even have XP setup on my Mom's machine which is 1Ghz. 733 and above is what I recommend for XP. Anything slower than a 733Mhz is not worth the time or money to put XP on. I realize that you want to cater to everyone, but at some point you will have to cut off those that will not make the move to better software.

By the way, I'm not some kid sitting on his Mom's machine typing this. I work as a Technical Specialist at First National Bank in Omaha Nebraska. This kind of stuff I deal with all the time, at work and at home since I do consulting on the side as well. I take a look at what will run on any given machine. Linux will install great on any machine as long as the hardware is supported. I have Redhat 9 running on Pentium 233's in console only. GUI is too slow on those. I even have it running on a Duel Pentium Pro 200 Server from Compaq. Can't test a gui on it though. The instance I put a video card with more memory than the built in Videocard, I get an IRQ Conflict that I can't fix without removing the SCSI Card which I need to run my External Tape Backup on. It works great for console stuff though.
Can't wait until Friday now.

XP Pro here.

XP only is ok for the EA but our potential customers may use older systems.
It would be nice if Win98 would be supported for V1 - maybe without shaders if this is the main problem.

Well, Everquest II doesn't seem to be having any problems selling their release. Have you seen the requirements on that? What a joke. You need a $3000 high-end machine just to run the friggin thing.

I just hope Lee doesn't get bogged down trying to get this thing to work with 98/ME in the time between EA and V1, when there are alot of other things to work on. That would be a crying shame IMHO.

We use XP (SP2) to develop, but we generally support Windows 98 and ME. Will the games we create run on '98/ME or is both the tool and the games created going to require XP?

I would say in the freeware market, there is still a lot of '98 machines downloading games off the Net.

I use 2000Pro, am a beta tester, and it works for me. It did'nt at first, but it does after Mike fixed a bug with the application headers or something.

XP here. I agree with my fellow users who urge you not to spend a great deal of time making the FPSC work with significantly older versions of Windows--at least not as an immediate priority. But this is not because I have little sympathy for them. Believe me, I understand using last half-decade's technology or operating system and being unable to upgrade. Been there, done that, could write the freaking book on having a big want list and no cash. They do have my sympathy, but so, too, do your other VERY LARGE group of users.

Yes, what concerns me is the huge bug list for your 'cough' OTHER flagship product . . . you know . . . just a hint; it goes by the name of DBPro. It would be nice if your team could spend, oh I don't know, a day or two to fix some of the things that people have been complaining about for a very long time, that are driving them collectively batty, things that something labelled PROFESSIONAL ought not have as problems. Just a suggestion though.

I was going to say that I too use XP, but I had trouble spelling it.
Anyhow, I too will be waiting first thing Friday, to get this program, I guess come Saturday, all the staff will be out buying new cars with all the dough that they get from us. HA! HA! HA1

I did use RC15 on 2000pro (as i was doing other stuff on my good PC), and it worked as fine as it can on a POS (933mhz, radeon 7500(or a matrox g450 dualhead when i want to use it), 256mb ram) the app itself didn't crash, but the games we're pretty much unplayable on it.

My computer date now says that its Feb 10 albeit 1.26am GMT and FPSC still seeems such a long way off. Hopefully there wont be any bad news later today - if there is then I may have to get drunk over the weekend and if theres good news - I may have to get drunk over the weekend

I dont know about TGC team but I am knackered just waiting for FPSC (and working long hours here too) So I recon that If FPSC gets shipped the team will more than deserve a well earned holiday.

As I have not done so and the relevant thread has dissapeared completely from view on my screen into oblivion and the FPSC archives, (before I get FPSC and forget to post this in the excitment),

I take this opportunity to say that I would like to thank TGC team for their foresight and all their hard work to bring this product too us. I also would like to thank the Forum mods and all the testers who posted stuff for us here, not forgetting all you other forum members (and anyone I missed out) who have kept me informed, entertained and happy when in dire need.

Thank you guys.

Catcha Later.

Microsoft Longhorn! I think thats coming out like in 8 months

J/K

But I really wonder what it must be like. I always look at it, sitting at the bit torrent sites, just asking to get downloaded , although, I am worried that it will ruin my computer, since it is still in the testing phase.

I have 2000pro but I also believe that you should make sure that it can work on 98 or ME for v1. (I also am using sp4) Also, it's not what this post is directly about but it is 7:15am right now where I am and I'm still waiting for FPSC. How many hours behind or ahead is England?
