why not simply use GameSpy... or All Seeing Eye
i use both, prefer ASE cause its much less demanding on the system.

And DB could achieve this - but not without a DLL to access any port on networks
... and its really be a waste of time trying.

Ok this is the weirdest post ever... (actually prolly not )

Yes in theory its possible but it would be really complicated, probably slow, and a massive waste of time... Can't you just download some free virus protection and firewall software and bulls*t your mum and dad with that?

just being online leaves the risk of being hacked ... unless you give someone a reason to do and your IP address it isn't likely that will happen.

programs like GameSpy and All Seeing Eye dont' actually use any REAL ports ... they're passive products - meaning you can't actually access your computer through them they're looking for specific data only.
if your going to get hacked then it is most likely people will do it whilst your playing the game.

But from my knowlage ONLY Half-Life suffers from hackers.
probably because the Quake3 netcode is so convoluted that no one cept id software understand it

it doesn't matter ... you have to open up the ports to allow the games to play - and this gives hackers the opertunities they need.

but as i said, unless you're a worthy target you'll be ignored - people are too "hacker" paranoid.
most people who do get hacked is because you've installed some warez (which you shouldn't of) or its a friend doing it for a laugh

Vegeta's right - but if your parents are over paranoid can't you just bullsh*t them a little bit? If they knew what they were talking about they probably wouldn't be worrying about it anyways

Wow what a strange post LOL; Ok lets clear acouple of things up. U dont need anything rediculous just a nat based router/firewall will protect u as much as any server can be with thousands of dollars spent. If your on cable or ADSL and i hope you are get yourself a Netgear or similar router/firewall unit it costs about $200 AU with this you can set up the incoming ports to only those you want to open to use. (eg: game ports ,chat ports). Thne just run the game server software to use those ports. As for hacking you will be protected by the NAT ip translation so no-one can see your real internal ip address to get to yor machine. Its the best option for a limited budget and as secure as youll get without spending big money. I run a small isp setup in a similar manner and it works. Hope this helps a bit. If you need any more info you can email me at necrym@hotmail.com ill be glad to give you any guidance.

OK, yea its possible to get hacked, but if by hacked you mean find out where you live, they need your IP and a nifty little piece of software called NeoTRACE (wont go into detail)

MOH, I dont think that can be done in DB, too high detail and such. Dont start so high. Try online pong!

Id suggest just setting up a server with Gamespy or ASI, because its very hard for people to hack, and they wouldnt waste their time hacking a small group of people with online pong, trust me. Just set up a fairly decent firewall (or two, or three or.....) and you should be fine. I dont think anyone will come looking for a small dark basic group through gamespy sorry there buddy
