i have some things to add to why the world is coming to an end, even though i dont think it is coming to an end .

1)Some massive wave a few hundred feet high, like in the movie "Day After Tomorrow" is supposed to be formed by half some island in the Atlantic Ocean breaking off and falling into the ocean, and itll supposedly destroy Miami and all these other cities.

2)Supposedly a "super volcano" in Yellowstone National Park (USA) is supposed to erupt and destroy and blackout all these cities (saw some commercial for a program on it on the Discovery Channel) and its a movie type thing supposedly based on the worlds best scientists predictions

3)With all these unresponsible countries *cough*North Korea*cough*Iran*cough* supposedly developing nuclear warheads, they might use them, creating some world nuclear war, killing a lot of people.

4)Since the ozone is melting, the sun will supposedly melt all the icecaps, creating worldwide flooding and entire continents to be wiped out.

So there you go . BTW George Bush isnt why the world is coming to an end . (sry just had to comment on that)

Video games…they can take you places unreachable, impossible, unfeasible. They put you in the book...they put you in the movie...they put you in a world, a world that before could only be imagined.

Matt - You said ALL stars supernova when they die. Which is very incorrect. A supernova is an explosion of a star that results in everything but the core being flung out into space. And for a brief time it is the brightest star in the sky. And then the core will either become a neutron star or black hole depending on its mass. Our sun which is quite an average star will never explode. It will expand into a red giant then collapse into a white dwarf, but it will NEVER supernova. Supernova does not mean expand, it means explode.

As for the magnetism stuff, it really hasnt been accepted by the whole scientific community. At least in relation to gravity anyway. Im not saying you shouldnt bring it up, just saying you shouldnt phrase it as fact because its not...yet.

Also I wouldnt exactly call the sources you provided accredited. Not saying they arent or that they are wrong. Im just saying citing an article from Nature, Scientific American, any physics journal would carry more weight than sites created by individuals. Even if those individuals have graduate degrees.

@ matt rock:

I think some of the facts you stated, ARE BS. Only Blue Giants, and other giant starsgo supernova. Some stars may go nova. Our star is NOT the smallest star. You are a complete idiot for saying this. It is a average star. Where did I learn this? 2004 Nasa. It is dying, but at a slower rate than you think. We have 5 BILLION years left. [opinion] The world might end, but will we? That gives us 4000 years before we completely wipe out ourselves, leave sol, or the aliens kill us off. I give 400 years untill we can colonize other worlds and fully use them. [/opinion]

The world will die. Give it time. I want to be alive when terra goes into complete desicration<-spelling!

One more thing about magnetism and gravity. According to Einstein's theory of relativity, there is no connection between magnetism and gravity. And since pretty much everyone in the scientific community considers that the best theory so far, conclusive evidence of the link between magnetism and gravity needs to be shown. And that evidence so far as has not been produced. It is sort of similar to when Einstein turned the whole world on its head. Everyone was damn sure Newton was completely right, then Einstein came along. Well now everyone is damn sure Einstein was correct. Now we need another person to come along to give us a better explanation of gravity. Maybe that will include magnestism, maybe it wont.

I say, the day Bush gets impeached because people find out that he cheated in the elections, He'll launch a thousand nuclear missels towards the sun.

The sun will then explode, killing everyone in a 10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10

We already know that. There's just nothing we can do about it.

But anywho it will only kill everyone in a 1/10th lightyear radius. As The UN and other countries will fire upon us thinking we are firing at them, thereby blowing up most of those 1000 missles in the attack. Leaving the sun totally unharmed and all of us will have a lovely sun tan all the way to the bone.

Global warming. What a fraud (IMO). According to many scientists, global warming is not an issue and will not kill off all life on this planet (especially humans and cockroachs [which will be around even after the earth explodes... amazing critters ]). They theorised that the earth has been through 2 ice-ages. According to the time-line, we are on the decline of the second ice-age and this is just a normal cycle of earth. I don't know the science behind it, but that's what a video and my Anthro teacher was talking about (of course, I'm not sure I believe half the stuff she says anyways).

In Matt's defense (not to say I fully agree with him, don't get me wrong ), he did post sources which were actually quite convincing to the common man. I'm not educated enough in the field to know how scientifically based they were on other studies, but he was the only person to list several sources. I will say that based soely on Einstein's equation: E=mc^2, Magnetism is not a factor in gravity, however, I say this only in the generalist sense. All objects with mass, reguardless of magnetism, do still have gravity, but we have no idea what amount of importance the earth's magnetism has on its own gravity. It appears that this new science, as has been stated, is just now coming to light.

No actually global warming is something to worry about. ALL scientists agree on that except a few crackpots. The debate is not about whether or not the Earth is warming, but whether or not humans are to blame. And that debate is pretty much over after a couple of new studies came out, at least for scientists.

New study that says the earth will warm and it dont matter what we do:
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/03/0317_050317_warming.html
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa003&articleID=000DA7C0-FBE9-1239-BBE983414B7F0000

The study really isnt an "ok, we can continue to do as we wish study" though it could be skewed that way. It still agrees humans are to blame however because even slight global temperature take years to fully take effect, all damage we have done so far still hasnt taken full effect. So if we want to stop further damage after 100 years, we need to stop emitting greenhouse gases now. And that is something the report says.

According to my science teacher (high school science mind you) its a combination of the ozone having a hole in it and the earth coming out of an ice age. The hole in the ozone is stabilizing. He also said that the ocean will act as a buffer and absorb some of the greenhouse gases. This doesn't seem quite right to me however, since my understanding of how a hole was made in the ozone. The ozone is O2 or O3, i forget which, but its oxygen thats bonded with oxygen. Greenhouse gases bond with one of the oxygen atoms and break the bond between the two (or 3) atoms depleting the ozone of ozone. So if the ocean absorbs the greenhouse they are already bonded with oxygen from the ozone, so the damage is already done. I'm probably wrong about this, and like I said, its based on what my high-school science teacher said.

ozone is O3..

The idea is probably that carbon bonds to oxygen, stripping away 2 oxygen from every ozone molecule (to form CO2 (carbon dioxide)

However, if the above is true (I don't know if carbon can steal two oxygen from an already existing O3 molecule) then carbon could bond to water in the same way, creating carbon dioxide and releasing an atom of hydrogen... in which case.. if the above like I said is true.. would bond with two oxygen and form h2o

I have no idea if that's possible... someone will probably come along later ^_^

(im pretty sure there needs to be some form of energy inserted in there somewhere to make it happen)

Black holes are apparently cause by the collapse of an extremly dense star(for instance, a neutron star). Just thought you would like to know that

I didn't say that, i was just correcting you on the fact that the earths magnetosphere has NOTHING TO DO WITH ITS GRAVITY. Nice college education there, what did you major in? Beauty therapy?

I realise that we don't actually know if it is the atoms that cause gravity, or some effect they have on space-time, or something else entirely, but we know that it is NOT caused by magnetism.

No we dont know it is NOT caused by magnetism. More and more research is showing that there is some link. However no conclusive evidence yet like I said before. For example, a couple years ago they figured out that galaxies have gigantic magnetic fields that extent beyond the visible boundary of the galaxy. I have no idea how they did, but they did. Now that may be no big deal until you make this realization: Magnetic fields are the ONLY thing apart of an object that extend beyond the physical boundary of an object. If you make that leap, then if you go a little further you will say: Maybe the magnetic field is somehow grabbing objects in space and pulling them in.

Of course there are objects without large magnetic fields that produce gravity also. So it isnt the whole story. But the point is that it makes you wonder. And it shows there could be a link between magnetism and gravity even though relativity says there cant be.

Now before anyone starts arguing with me, the only true fact is that galaxies have magnetic fields that extend farther than its visible boundary. Also they have only found this for one galaxy so far so it may not be a universal thing, but they are looking at others now.

thats not what i'm saying about what he's saying. he was trying to tell us that the earths gravity is partly dependant on the earth magnetosphere. I'm not saying that atoms magnetic fields don't have anything to do with gravity, but the lining up of atoms to create strong fields do not contribute towards the force we know as gravity. if it were true, then all the formulas that are usd to calculate gravity, that have proven to be correct so far, must be wrong

I know what you are saying. And I am saying there is evidence that the large magnetic fields produced by planets, stars, galaxies may play a role in gravity. Another thing they have found is magnetic fields keep nebulaes from forming one giant star. Instead it keeps clusters of matter spread out. And again this is just more evidence that magnetic fields might have something to do with gravity though in this case it isnt evidence for magnetic fields producing gravity. But again it shows some sort of interaction.

Source:
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/astronomy/magnetic_star.html

And yes the formulas would be wrong...sorta. Newton's equations were considered to be 100% correct until Einstein. Newton's equations are actually still quite accurate for the world we perceive, but they break down when things start moving at the speed of light. And Einstein's equations are believed to be 100% correct now which work for the world we perceive and at the speed of light. However if history is a lesson, they arent completely right either. And already we know Einstein's equations arent 100% right because they dont work in the subatomic realm. That is why there is a field called quantum mechanics. But quantum mechanics so far cant explain what relativity can, so there is something missing. And part of that missing something may include magnetism and gravity.

I am not saying magnetic fields produce gravity. I am simply saying there is some evidence that there is a link. And that scientists are looking into that possible link.

Hey at least it was original.

Gravity is thought to be the 4th dimention, the more mass an object has the more it distorts the 4th dimention. some time in the past they sent a prob behind the sun and could still get a signal which proved it to be correct. it was origonaly thought up by Einstein you may of saw picutures of the sun making a sort of cone shap because of its gravity.

if there was no magnetisphere then the earth wouldnt be protected from solar radiation so the atmoshpere whould be blown away. Like on mars

E=MC^2 is a way of converting mass in to energy which is Energy=Mass*Speed of light^2 so that dosent prove anything about gravity. but einstines laws of reletivity do.

The earth also goes threw a cycle of heating and cooling because the sun warms and cool. this is also thought to be the cause of global warming. but all these are constanly being debated.

Any spelling mistakes are totally In tensional.

Well yes except one thing, time IS the fourth dimension. A dimension is something that can physically describe an object, not a force that acts upon it. Though there is some debate whether gravity is a force or not. Here are the 4 main dimensions:

1) length
2) width
3) height
4) time

And then for quantum mechanics they add on several more dimensions such as spin I believe. But if you hear someone talk about 4D, it just means they are talking about 3D over time as time is the 4th dimension.

However you are right when you say gravity distorts time. Einstein said gravity distorts space-time aka 4D world.

Until you say something intelligent, stop talking. All you're doing is wasting space. Billy has intellectual arguements, and all you're capable of is insulting me... and you're doing an extremely poor job at it, too. Either say something (A) funny, or (B) intelligent, or go post elsewhere.

Please note that the moderator, if indeed one wrote that and it wasn't haxor, didn't give his name. I don't know what I did to make all of you so angry, but whatever, go read a book and then start in with your insults. And flibble, if you know how to read, then why don't you read things in their entirety? I said I RE-WRITE articles. The company I work for takes articles written by college professors, NASA astrophysicists, and other members of the science community and we proof-read, edit, etc. each article so that it's a bit more appealing to the common person. We focus entirely on space and news relative to the field. And no, I don't have a degree in beauty therapy... I have a degree in political terrorism, a second in ballistics, and my two minors were CS (more specifically, general computer engineering) and media arts. Ballistics talked about this topic for quite some time as it does relate to long-range artillery... but I won't get into that topic because I know I'll just be met with pointless insults from pointless people who have absolutely no formal education regarding the subject. Billy, I enjoyed talking with you, but to those of you who met my comments with insult rather than intelligent arguement, go study these topics and e-mail me your sources that back up the moronic things you say. I posted sources... Billy posted sources... the rest of you just drooled and twiddled your thumbs.

Another note: if indeed it truly was a moderator who wrote that rediculously pathetic comment, step forward and tell me who you are, coward. Don't hide behind someone else's sn. As a moderator you're supposed to be setting an example for regular members on these forums, and actions like that show only your lack of trustworthiness. I ask other mods to investigate this, if you can, to find out who wrote that post. But I'm sure no mods will answer my call.

I'm done with this thread. If anyone wants to talk to me about this topic, feel free to e-mail me. I'm fed up with posting in threads where people argue not understanding even the most elementary principals of the subject at hand, and quite frankly, I might be done with these idiotic forums for good because all anyone ever does is flame one another and start arguements just for the sake of arguing.

You have to realize some of that stuff is due to the fact that the average user age of the forum is quite low. Not saying it should be excused, but just try to ignore it.
