I was wondering the easiest way to allow a player of a text based rpg (MUD style) to input commands such as

level
u
d
n
s
e
w
inv
list

just to name a few.

Thanks.

Hmm... Just an idea...
I'm not sure if youll understand the theory here.

Basically, it asks for input "all" the time.
And it checks the current input data against other data stored in the program.

Also, you might want to adapt the n,s,e,w commands to the arrow keys. To make it easier for them to move in the mud.

I hope that works for you.
