For an FPS, all you'll see of your Player Character (PC) is the weapons and the hands holding them. In all FPS games, weapons and hands are modelled independantly of the PC's model (would still need hands and weapons for that, but at a lower poly count) and placed in front of the camera.

And, by fpshooter, do you mean FPS Creator? If so, it seems good (judging from the demo game provided in a recent issue of PC Format UK), but you can't sell the games you make with it... need to be freeware.
