MVC are selling some really old games (3 for £10), two of which are Wipeout 2097 & Destruction Derby 2

Whilst I would love to buy these, according to the back there are for W95 only.

So, the question is : Has anyone got these working on XP (or even 98) ?

they only say Win95 only because if you remember when they first came out there was only 3.1 and 95 out
for some reason companies don't update game boxes or specs much - silly really ... for a tenner i'd get them and if they don't work ya know either take them back or use them as frisbes

probably will work in 95compatibility mode thou

The Windows XP conpatibility option doesn't always work. Infact, i tried Worms Armegeddeon (sp?) earlier and it wouldn't run, so i tried the Compatibility options and it still didn't work.

I might just get Wipeout 2097 for £3.99, I think it is and see if that works first. Dont mind if I have to use in '98 too much either.

well anything that works in 95 ... is MORE likely to work in 98 - especially SE
but i mean the OS is essentially the same, just had 2years of bug worming done on it.

i've never had a problem with compatibility mode, even Day of the Tenticle now works properly - and that never even worked in Win95 very well, required an exclusive DOS box.
Same goes for Elite2 my fav game ever

if for any particular reason they don't work, on bootup press F8 as the Floppy seeks - then choose Step-By-Step
load everything except SmartDrive ... it should then run, because 9/10 its because of the First 640kb that can be acessed

remember don't always try just Win95 mode, try the others too - sometimes is a hit and miss affair which one it prefers.
as far as i'm conserned a tenner isn't much, and as i said - if they don't work most places have money back gaurentees within like 10-15days so no biggie just take it back and swap.

i used to do it all the time with N64 games a good few years back - complete a game and take it back, just like renting it think i played the entire collection of games available that way ... especially as the new ones cost like £50, and really 2 or 3 games would've killed me at £50 a pop

@Raven

Day of The Tentacle is awesome, i loved the Original Maniac Mansion, used to play it on the C64

Monkey Island is also amazing.

My suggestion is, use a dual boot system. I have WinXP and Win98 on on HDD, and it works perfectly. I've encountered a few games that didnt work in XP and when I reboot and go to 98 it works like a charm!

Whatever I did I didn't do it!

thats only because the SCUMM2 engine was designed to use DirectX - woulda been very annoying if it didn't use windows

even so it wasn't exactly greatly compatible

Good news - Wipeout 2097 works in XP. The installer has to be made to run in 95 mode. The game doesn't need to but its way to fast otherwise...

It really annoys me when I install old progams in 2K and the installer informs me that "this will not work on NT machines - please reinstall on a windows 95 machine", when the program clearly will and does!

i think one of the funnier installer bugs was when Maya4 was first released someone cocked up the installer for it.

So it wouldn't start the installation on anything except Win9x machines ... however when i got to Maya's self system check it wouldn't allowed you to start the actual installation because it requires an NT based system

alot of apologies and replacements Discs were sent out after that (^_^) was amusing to me thou

Got DD2 working, but only on my '98 (and in low resolution).

With XP, you get a nice corrupted screen, which I suspect is to do with a resolution that DD2 uses and which XP (or the grpahics card) doesn't support.

run it in Win95 256-colour mode, i had that same problem with some other games like Carmageddon.

Rather than using the paletted 256 colours it uses the 16bit Standard 256 Colour Table (so looks all freaky)

No, certainly doesn't work - obviously some other timing problem that (sort of) doesn't occur with '98.

Shame really...
