So far, of all the demos and screenshots I have seen, the graphics in DB look like there from the wolfenstien era. Can DB be used to create nice looking graphics? (of course, I dont mean like Quake3 or Unreal2). I dont want to create a game that looks like a dogs breakfast (a pixilated dogs breakfast). How good can the graphics in DB get? Is it pretty limited?

the graphics are limited to your own skills as an artists... if your not one (like most here) it will look like the "dogs breakfast" as it were.

this isn't DarkBasics fault, this is actually all down to your own
the problem is alot of coders also don't have the ability to think thier way around problems graphically very well - so this means that you can have even few nice looking demos.

however noting that the graphics are close to 286 Wolf3D, somehow i feel that you've been smoking something strong ... even to me it doesn't seem that poor, and personally i'd say the graphics quality on adverage is around that of early 3D accelerator games

I want meaning to attack DB. It seems like all the demos I have seen use no 3d accleration at all. Wether this is a limitation to DB or the programmer, I am unsure. Would you be able to post a link or two to games wich do look like 'early 3D accelerator games'? I would be interested to see just what DB can do.

Incidently, I just downloded DBpro. The face demo in that looks sweet. To achive 3d accelerated effects, do I need DBPro?

just start programming in DB, then you'll see what graphics you can get. there are'n real limitations so you can use as much polygons as you want. there's some stuff like bump mapping in DBpro that you can't do in DB... DB can handle all directx 7.0 effects
dbpro can handle dx8.0 effects

DarkBasic itself utilises Direct3D hardware... and if you can't tell that the graphics are similar to the first generation of 3D Acelerators then obviously you never used the first generation.

Untextured blocks rendering scenes of almost 3,000 polygons onscreen at once with fogging effects on a Pentium 60 that was Mechwarrior2 and Sarab utilising the PowerVR and Orchid Voodoo - those were/are the earliest PC 3D Accelerators.

You only have to play games suchas Quake2 or Tomb Raider in Software Render modes to notice the difference between a 3D Accelerated game and a CPU based game.

i'd love to post up screenshots of these, however none of the card i use now are capable of rendering 256colour Software engines without using the standard Windows Colour map (which looks a bit psycadellic )

but as i've said its all upto who is using the program what effects can be achieved - because I've personally got Quake2 Style OpenGL looks from DarkBasic Enhanced, where as most here who barely understand the language are only able to achieve standard looking graphics... and the artwork does play a vital role in producing visually pleasing effects.

so my statement as it always has been is the only limitations DarkBasic truely holds is what the programmer and artists are capable of producing!

From what I can tell, DB runs on a DirectX 7-era graphics engine, so you can expect graphics to be similar to games made in the DirectX 7 era. DBPro, on the other hand, supports the most current versions of DirectX. Take a look at their demo. Of course, if you can't make good-looking models and textures it doesn't matter.

What demos where you looking at, while I admit we do post a lot of pong demos and such that will never look stellar if you look at the gallery you will find some very pretty demos. Personaly I like "Equilibrium" I actually think it looks better then Final Fantasy 7 (yea the model of the hero could use more detail but the engine itself was great)

I agree Equilibrium was truley an AWESOME game They shouldnt have stopped

3D is not based on DarkBASIC, it is based on you, yourself as a modeller.

The only thing DB limits is polycount. Dont expect to remake FFX (like most crazy arse noobs do, and no, I was not targeting that at you so dont reply )

... I don't want to read all because I don't have time enough this evening, but .. boolean, the problem isn't the resolution, but it is : Are you able to make nice 3d models ? Or have you a friend who can ?
In my games, I can use the display mode 1600*1200*32 ( with db pro ), but they aren't nice because I work alone and I don't have nice picts or nice models
if a game is nice, it don't because of db, but because of the men who made it.

P.S.: I'm looking for a lovely girl, 16 - 17 years old, brown hairs, and who like programming and making 3d objects to join my project ... Do you know one ??

I'm following John, but I'm not john.

I just searched on google and I found it. Looks nice indeed. I wonder how they did the water animation.

Water animation is not hard at all ^_^ they are simply planes, which are slightly tipped up and are on an function to move back and forth

i don't remember the Equilibrium demo, think i'll install again from the CD and check it out

most common method used was the one that Lee used in Jetski just a sin wave over a matrix (^_^)
i did a similar thing when Enhanced was released with a texture, was a little slow but looked cool (unless you got around 10-0° level with the plain then you'd notice it was fake hehee

recently helped my bro with the math for his Turok style water, that was fun

so many way to reproduce convincing water (^_^)

I think Equilibrium was quite simple game... there's nothing special with the engine, it's only the models that makes it looks professional

turoks water is kind like little dimples going up and down constantly - i did a sin wave to do 60 offset per texture.
i'll ask my brother later if i'm allowed to show it cause it is mostly his work i just coded a small section

Is your brother on this forum by any chance? (if he uses DB) Man I wish my brother was into these kinds of things like me It must be cool having someone around that you can work with Ive never actually met someone in person that programs- having a brother that likes it would be awesome

my brother signed up once... both of them have accounts here and one has one at RGT, as does my sister (^_^)

but i don't think he ever visits ... he came on here once, said everyone was mean to him and just left it.
Think he was still pretty pissed off for being kicked out of RGT for no reason other than he used the home AOL account.
And aparently everyone was shitty towards him there too - so i dunno i wouldn't expect him to come on anytime soon to be honest.

my whole family has something to do within the industry ... myself and my next brother down are 3D Artists (however my bro is a far better 2D guy, can do things in photo which are unbelieveable) ... my youngest is a programmer - or rather studying to be one.
He's just learning DarkBasic, i mean he dabbled in it a few months back ... just a few things, but not alot.
He's mostly a C/C++ programer, so the principals are the same he says - he just has to think more linear.
He's helped me learn C++ quite alot, but he won't teach me alot just a few things now an again.

and my sis is also a coder for some software company over in texas (don't ask me where, cause all i know is its about 2hours drive from Dallas Airport)

kinda cool cause both me and my sis are close to the same age, so we're trying to get the best positions in what we do at the same time (^_^) ... thought i think its unfair cause she gets to learn from our adopted uncle, damn'd professional helps not on

btw it might take a while to talk to my bro here cause he's likely to be asleep until lunchtime again. What is it about holidays that make people sleep longer?
College day, up at 5-6am ... Holiday, you'll be lucki if you see him before noon
