The edge image file is used to give an almost "halo" like effect the object - it doesn't map to the actual mesh, just the outline of it (which is constantly changing) otherwise it'd look like chunky wireframe mode was on
The edge image really only needs to be a BMP file of 16x1 pixels in size and solid black.
For the shade image again create a similar size BMP and put 16 shades of a colour in it going across, these are the colours that will be used to "fill in" your cartoon. It doesn't have to be this size (or those colours) so experiement a bit with this one.
