Dark GDK / Adding a .tga or .dds texture to an object

Does anyone have any idea of how to apply a .dds or .tga image to a plain object, breaking it up first and allowing for animation?

I tried the dbLoadBitmap and then the dbGetImage commands on the flame.dds file which I got from the latest TGC newsletter and the screen just went black.
