What is the actual command for dbSetObjectAmbient though? I can't seem to find it.

Youmay try to look in the SDK SDKBasic3d.h (dunno if the name is correct)

Anyway,.. I am not at home so I dont have access to the files.

May you try "dbSetAmbient(int ObjID, bool isAmbient)".
