I'm planning to create a RPG game.
I've got a little problem with the world map.

I want to create a matrix which will actualize everytime that the character moves. It will be a little matrix to represent a very big world.

The problem is that I've got bitmaps of the counties with the mountains, hills, etc. painted with different colours depending of the height of the points, like it was a map, an atlas.

Do you think that the program will work right if I read from the bitmap the colours and the program translate them into height data everytime that the matrix needs to actualize itself??

Thank you very much.

alot of people have done this already... the techique is called Height Mapping - where you take a GreyScale bitmap and based on the 0 - 255 value it changes the height accordningly.

Common practise and i'm sure you can find a code snippet or something here or at RGT which you can adapt

There's a tutorial on how to make a terrain from a greyscale map at www.gamedevnetwork.com

Whatever I did I didn't do it!

ya... i think i saw on CodeBase.co.uk there was source for this.

there has been alot of development in this field, i mean some of the Matrix editors use it - so can rest assured its more than possible, just a case fo figuring it all

I've done it in DBC with a heightmap for Earth and it worked ok - if only the heightmap I have was more detailed I would have made a game out of it but I just cannot be doing with an England half a dozen tiles big - I want the white cliffs of dover in all their glory!
