Well done on winning Ooga Booga

Now to move on
The next theme is 'Low poly spaceship'
And well I'll quote ooga
Quote: "Entries will be judged on poly count versus quality. You must provide a download for the model in some kind of universal format so that the poly count can be confirmed. (.3ds, .x, .obj, and so on) For the picture of it, don't make a complex scene, just render it on a plane or something simple as this contest isn't focused on the final render. Feel free to use normal maps and such and do fancy tricks with the textures, but don't use an internal fire effect for an engine, make a texture for it like it is done for real games."

Length 10 days

hey, I'm kinda sorta new here, got linked from Darkcoder over there, anyways sounds like fun so I started something basic. I'm not a great person at adding detail but I'll see what I can do while keeping poly limit low.

Its a 3D modelling contest made for 3D modellers to challenge each other and improve their skills and keep them away from a 3D modeller's block, no prizes except the winner get to choose the next theme, and well read the first post for what you have to do in this contest

Well as long as it gets your votes dude , dunno what it looks like, the idea is to model especially for the compo, it kind of defies the point if you dig out an old model and go 'I'm entering it'

@Swift nice model, see your post just got approved hence I didn't see it before Whats the polygon count?

I made a Superhulk Miniboss and imported it into T3DGM quite awhile ago, so this thumbnail is kinda small .X model + textures included. 240 polies.

Please try to make the models especially for te compo, it is kind of lazy, if I get too many like that, I might end up making it a rule

i think the point is to make it as low as possible...

no real limit... but if you make a high poly model don't expect to have a chance at winning

Yup, what he said, everything Ooga Booga applied into his part of the rulings has to apply So please make sure you keep us informed on poly counts too, oh and NGONs count as cheating,as not everyone has them

I recommend polycounting would be per triangle, that'll make ngons not counted...

Here is a thread that might inspire the contestants... or maybe they're too much...?

Good luck to everyone! (i'm not joining...)

I've created a basic ship, 32 polys. It reminds me of hell bender. anyway I've made a texture for it, and I used lithunwrap to uv map it, only I can't get the texture on the model... i'm so the lame, well here is the model and the uv map texture for anyone who wants to sort my problem out. I made it in milkshape so its ms3d format. I can always export to x or whatever but that won't solve my texture problem. if anyone knows how to assign a uv texture in MS please tell me.

It inspires in a differant way, those are nice images, makes me want to make my own ship, prolly a pirate ship as my texturing skills only stretch to only wood at the moment

@Wigget please use a universal file format, like .x or even better, .3ds or .obj, because I and a few other people don't own milkshape

well sepukku I would export to x, but my problem is getting the texture on the object, and I doubt anyone has a .x editor.

try .3ds, the texture doesn't matter, posting the object is to prove the poly count, you can post a screenshot and a poly count for everyone else

@Add, kewl, good luck

and here is the texture

edit: if your post was aimed at me ooga i made this model in about 20 mins after i read this post. i's not old.

Sorry but im gonna have to add this as a rule, you can only enter models that were created after the contest started, so no digging out old stuff, its not fair to the people who have to work with the 10 day limit.

also i suggest that you are not allowed to make a render at all. as in the entry must be a screen shot from your app!! this will make it for sure that render tricks arent used. the only thing that knocks out that suggestion is if someone used normal maps or texture tricks but its a suggestion. and second suggestion is a wireframe should be a requirement upon entry!

@Wigget, I don't think it was directed at you, I mentioned about peoples entries being old work, above your post. Nice texturing job and work

@Ooga, might be best idea to make that a permanent ruling

Quote: "also i suggest that you are not allowed to make a render at all. as in the entry must be a screen shot from your app!! this will make it for sure that render tricks arent used"

I agree, but if you're like me and you're app displays textures low res in your editor, or if your editor doesn't display the bump maps/normal maps then you can render as long as you don't use tricks and display an editor screenshot.

Good luck you lot.

Oh and
IMPORTANT POINT:

At everyone interested in my contests, I will and new rulings to the compo, I think it might be a nice idea for the winners to manage their themed contest, so its more community based, so if Ooga wants to he can start now, but I'll try to keep the rules in order and up to date.

well i think this compo is quite weird since there is no poly limit - but oh well... mine is a bit higher than others here, but since there was no limit, i believe it makes up for it in coolness.

236 poly's - still a major WIP - still gotta texture it

I haven't done one of these in a while... Here's a quick entry. 528 Polies, 45 minutes to model, texture and render... I might slap together another just for the heck of it or I might even work a little more on this one.

Is there an entry fee?
Is there any kind of prize for the winner?
Can you enter more than once?

Sorry for sounding dumb, but I'm new to this, and it sounds like you guys have done this before.
Quote: "Well as long as it gets your votes dude "

Can I get all the details of how your contestS work?

Thanks

@Swift Striker
Sweet.
I do not see a need for wings on a spaceship.
When I think of The Melenium Falcon or the USS Enterprise, I visualize pancakes and get hungry though.

@Calypson
That looks tough.
It makes me think wings might be okay after all.

@Conjured I'll explain these contests for you

The purpose is self improvement, and feeling good about your work, and killing the '3D modellers' block, its what I've (A BigAdd) had devised to allow people to challenge each other and work on their 3D modelling skills.

No entry fee, no prize, except to choose the next theme and the rules of the next theme, in general they last 10 days, but the winner can extend or shorten it if they choose. (Like before Christmas Mach made a long one)

any one can enter, but I am a bit sour about people who can take the win entering, but I will allow them to enter once within a period of time, like Mach.

Rules are:
-Obviously - Your own work
-Your work must be specifically for the contest(Just added as a rule rather than guideline)
-Abide by the extra rules/guidelines for the specific contest.
-No cheating (Have had it happen, work will be denied for at least one contest)
-Must be 3D work (obviously)
-When voting, you are not allowed to vote for yourself

Previous contests,
The first contest- Known character contest (Winner Big Add)

I used procedurals and then used a script to generate a UV map from them.

I don't even know what procedurals are, but go ahead, just as long they don't put you at the advantage, lets see what you make out of this

Procedurals are basically internal shaders like the 'cloud' texture in blender. You can layer them to get different results.

I like all the fighters I've seen.

The Donald told me to think big, so here's a noob's version...
I call her ..."The Green Dwarf"
She's less than 300 polys I think.

Tools Used
Model   = Game Space Light
Texture = Microsoft Paint

I am stuck using the Free utilites for now.
The JPGs came out fuzzier than my BMPs but they are a lot smaller.
