I decided to post my latest version of my retro game as today I put together that little character that's in the corner and does stuff in 2 hours after school today. I'm pretty pleased. The demo is quite big unzipped (79MB), but only 1.4MB zipped, because it is a final exe. Please test it and say what it's missing (apart from 2 player, and I know the text is doubled up) and I'll really appreciate it. There's 4 levels, but more will be in the final game, as many as I can be bothered to think up.

Much Thanks

Hamish

(hey the edit's working)

"Sorry, Tripod is temporarily unavailable while we carry out essential improvements. Full service will be resumed on 29th March."

That's why Hamish, 'tis a shame cos I wanted to try it, oh well

79mb from 1.4mb? Surely that's a typo Maybe you scared some peeps off with that too I'm sure you meant 7.9mb, please update this thread when your site comes back online so I can try it out

Nope 79MB. But thats UNzipped, my game has alot of bitmaps and I made a FINAL exe, to save the hassle of sorting out my files. Funny, the site works ok for me, dunno whats up with that, I know I can't edit my site now but you should be able to access it, I can access other lycos sites. I can send it to you in an e-mail if you want.

I took this paragraph from the lycos website:

Quote: "All Tripod member sites will remain accessible during the work, but service might be slower than usual. "

it works here

nice game!

it gives a runtime error after the first level
is this normal?

the menu system is way to slow...

how did you made your game so fast? don't you work with sprites?

My menu system is temporary, It uses sprites and that is why it is slow. I use textured plains and not sprites in the main game (although the bouncing text is sprites). I've never really used sprites alot but I heard they were slow so I used objects. I don't get a runtime error, have you tried it again? Thanks for your comments, much appreciated!

Thanks, as I said I will make more levels, its just it is tedious writing the levels down in a text file (I really need to make a level maker). I am planning to make some changes to the concept but I probably won't have enough time before the comp .

I have a few bugs with the collision detection that I need to iron out, but not anything huge and game ruining though!

I have done a menu system now, but still need to:
- Make a score recording system
- Find more sound effects and some music
- Find or make some pictures for the background
- Add more pirate animations
- Impliment lives and game completed ending
- Add some more visuals and effects
- Improve menu system

So I'd better get busy :-s!

p.s. Dan - I used winzip, what do you mean, when you click on the download link or on the puzzle bobble page?

Must do some experimenting with winzip...

I'm looking forward to those changes. A level editor would be great, you could implement this in the menu system and let the users make and load their own levels just in the game menu

The screen resolution should be adjustable, coz it isn't very beautiful like it is now

Crap, screen res! I'll have to resize the sprites and make the text positions adjust according to the screen res. Hmmm. I'll make the level editor very simplistic, drag and drop type thing, and you can adjust the grid width and possibly the background and stuff.

your screen res problem isn't a large program... you said you made the game in 3d and not without sprites

its only for the menu system you could have problems (but that menu system is too slow with sprites like it is now)

ok I see, only those text positions, but that isn't very difficult
for example, when you want to have text in the middle of the screen

center text screen width()/2,screen height()/2,"blablabla"

I do use sprites, for the bouncing words, but that's all.
