About the game:
Zombie Hunter is a Horror First Person Shooter. Written in DarkBasic 1.13 (classic)
You play the role as Carl, apparantly the only survivor of an nuclear accident that wiped out a whole town.
For a Quick brief of what the game is all about, have a look at this video M$-Sam and i created. http://lukasw.com/downs/videos/Uten_0002.wmv - 4mb

Progress:
The game have been under development since february this year.
I have however made other versions of the game: the "classic" game, which i completed in 2003 and the "survive" game that is a remake of "classic". which i completed in 2005. This (v1.8) is the original game, the "story" game. i have rewritten the game engine 3 times and just now have i found a way to code it the way i want it to be.
The game engine (called Z-Engine) will be open source, and this game will not. more information about Z-Engine will come. i will just have to do a couple of things with it first.

Something Awesome:
because my website is not fully working (only for me it looks like ) it's a bit hard to actually see what i've done to the website.
but the website for Zombie Hunter is: http://zombiehunter.lukasw.com however it's not recently been updated due to what i've just said.

Screenshots: i only have one screenshot at the moment.

And the Download:
v1.8.0.7 - 38'174 kb [rar]

the file is huge, i know. it's because of dbc not being able to load .x files with .jpg textures, so i have to use .bmp's.

with that said, enjoy .

edit, Z-Engine is now released:

Z-Engine is an Open Source FPS Game Engine for use With DarkBASIC v1.13. in order to compile, you need DarkEDIT with Global Function turned on!

# Z-Engine Features stuff like: Automatic loading of Levels
# Player Movement With Sliding Collision
# 3 Weapons (pistol, shotgun and flashlight)
# Can be used with Tiame2 or with some coding, your own world editor
# Fire & Explosions
# Doors
# Zombie AI
# Human AI (Pistol and Shotgun) [attack zombies and player]

Z-Engine is not a tool for Complete Beginners, it is required that you have knowledge of programming in DarkBASIC.

I love my new 8Mbps broadband connection. Downloaded really quickly.

Not bad for a dbc game.

Shame that it had a few too many glitches for me to enjoy properly. Go up close to a wall and you can see through them, big blue bits of backdrop cut through the sky, and it crashes on me a few steps into level 2.

Boo!

heh, fear my awesome wireless 40 second download.
54mbps wireless... 100mbps on a wire.

Cool, but I fell through the floor in the sewer level.

Levels were nice, but unfortunately had some collision problems and lightmap issues

i tried to make it dramatic but i dont know :/ what's your opinion of it?

are the controls too difficult?

What buildings? If you mean the ones in the City level(The third level), I made that level, and the buildings use textures from limefly.net

Wow, it looks liek you did a lot of work on that!

My suggestions:

1. better gun sound effect
2. smarter zombies
3. make it so that objects behind walls are hidden (it went slow on my comp in level 2)
4. the footsteps sound like interference (spelling?) in a radio.

I loved:

1. EAX!
2. reload sound effect!
3. levels are neat!
4. explosions pretty good!

All in all, I say good job!

very cool . Except there were quite a few bugs/problems . I don't know if you want me to name them or not, so i will .
1) It looks like your skybox needs to be smaller, the camera range isnt that far:

2) It did something wierd when it snowed:

3) There were a lot of collision problems , a lot with the walls, the two times i played to the sewer level, i fell through the world and died in the exact same spot (at the place where theres those two barrels, which is cool that they explode )
4) A grammar error is in the second prologue, I dont know exactly what is says, but its something like "i dont know what have happened", the "have" should be "has" .

Anyways, looking very cool .

wow, there are many bugs now:

* Go up close to a wall and you can see through them (dont know how to fix yet)
* big blue bits of backdrop cut through the sky (probably the camera view range)
* it crashes on me a few steps into level 2 (don't know exactly why, but if you have a weapon drawn, but it's not visible, and you try to shoot, it will crash)
* collision problems (yeyeye)
* lightmap issues (make new, optimize level)
* it is slow (hide limbs)
* better gun sound effect (easy, as long as i know how to talk)
* smarter zombies (would take a while )
* make it so that objects behind walls are hidden (hide limbs)
* the footsteps sound like interference (spelling?) (dont know how yet)
* It looks like your skybox needs to be smaller, the camera range isnt that far (camera view distance)
* It did something wierd when it snowed (fix it so it's able to load the proper rain dropimage)
* fell through the world and died in the exact same spot (create collision box for that i think)
* A grammar error (..YEP I KNOW SPELLINGJ VEEDOT WELL!!!one!ninetyeight)

Nice lightmapping, but otherwise quite buggy...
These are the bugs I found, except the already mentioned ones:

1.The zombies got stuck in their attack animation and there were big holes in them(try to use "cap" or something like that).

2.I don´t know if it was a bug, but I was able to go through closed doors.

3.The zombies was able to walk through the walls and sometimes they were stuck in the walls.

4.Shooting on a zombie while it dies just makes it loop its animation over and over.

5.And walking down the stairs was impossible.

This game can become really good, but you need to work a bit more on it.

crashed on sewer level, error: 123

also, i think the camera height is to high ! makes all the doors look to small, the walking is kind off slow clumbsy

Played your game. I liked it very much, even though there where some bugs in it.
How does your player collision work? are you using an hidden object at the cameras location?
If so i think i can help you with the looking through walls problem.

Still a noob. easy comes easy goes

the bug list keeps growing is this a game an application written in word or a playground for bugs?
i really think that it's cool gmae.

for the player collision, i use sparkys collision DLL.
which basically means that i am using 3 points from the camera position:
cy = camera position y
point 1 = cy (middle)
point 2 = cy + 40 (head)
point 3 = cy - 40 (feets)

then i check if one of them three points are hitting something.
if point 1 and point 2 are colliding with something, and not point 3, then the player can crouch.

if point 3 is hitting something and not point 2 or 1 then it's a stair or something, and the player moves up.

I now notice that it causes some bugs. but it's a very effective method imo

when the player hits a wall (all 3 points collide) then i get the collision x and z value, adds that with the collision normal (angle of the collision) and replace that value with the x and z position of the player. that way i get sliding collision. but it doesn't check for collision until the player is <0.1 steps from the wall, so you see through it. if i can figure out how to get the player positioned a little but off the wall, then it would be better. same goes with AI.

Okay. Just a quick idea here:
Try casting the collision raycast, from an object in-stead off from the cameras position. The object is at the cameras position but, when you move forward the "collision object" is moving a bit faster forward(so its like +1 unit in front of the camera), same goes for strafeing left/right.
I think this would work.

Hope you figure it out.

Good game, just need a bit better collision, and fixing of the sky sphere.

hmm, i also got an idea that is based on yours:

cast a ray in the direction the player is moving,
when the ray is smaller than say 2, the camera will then follow the path of the collision route, but it should be 2 steps away from the wall/collision instead of 0 steps away.

i will try these ideas out as soon as i get home from work tomorrow, today i don't have time.

why dont you try to change the camera range, that should fix the problem of looking trough walls,

set camera range 5,whatever

i think defaul is 3, so try 5

Hey Lukas, nice game! Alittle on the slow side for me, but it definately game me some ideas on how to make this kind of game. Were you trying to go for a Resident Evil type game, because it definately shows?

ok supremacy i will try that tomorrow i have the whole day off, so maybe i will write a patch.

Thanks Manette, i am working on releasing the game engine that zombie hunter uses, called Z-Engine. it will be open source. so if you want to make a game like this, have a look at that game engine. but first i will have to fix these bugs.

No, i didn't really think of Resident Evil when i started the game.
i've always liked old zombie movies, and well.. zombies.. so i figured why not make a game about zombies.

to compile and run the z-engine, you need:

* DarkBASIC v1.13
* DarkEDIT with GLOBAL function turned ON.
