The main point is...

A GOOD STORYLINE

That's what makes a good rpg (well and gameplay, you want to play it if it had good gameplay).

Make sure that random encounters are not boring! That's the case with so many RPGs out there - you don't really want to go anywhere because you'll just meet something small and squishy that wants you to kill it!

One way is to come up with an interesting and novel idea for a combat system - Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Force are very good examples of this.

Dont copy off other rpgs. People like to view story sequences and get involved with the story. great music is paramount but graphics are of less importance. The battle system is important. It must keep the player on his/her toes but not impossibly difficult.

Im addicted to Proplus.

Also have something that the player can aim for, like gaining skills for battles or unlocking mini-games and different parts of the map for example. If there is nothing to aim for and no storyline then the game is unplayable, and yeah, music is very important!
