Can I use 3rd party commands in my DarkAI entry, such as Cloggy's D3DFunc dll?

Just because im called the one noob to rule them all doesnt mean you have to ignore me...

I will ask again...

"What about shaders? I dont think that .fx shaders can be inside the .exe. So can we use them?"

Edit "31st of July 2006" That would end on midnight UK time right?

What about them? Why would we outlaw a feature of DBPro that we encourage use of? No one said all of your files have to be inside a single EXE.

i finally got 3dws, so i made a quick level; now all i need to do is program the AI.
currently the entry is 20megs zipped. that could be a problem..
i guess i won't use any lightmap, nor will i use the extra objects i wanted to add. hmm..

I plan on an entry. I'm buying Dark AI for it but I'm not sure how long it will take me. It all depends on the learning curve.

[edit] @scraggle - I would love to see a dark physics compo. Don't know if a dark lights compo would really have much flavor though.

Do, or do not. There is no try.

I should be getting my copy of Dark A.I in the next couple of days, so I think I'm gonna have a go at this.

My first TGC compo woohoo!

Its probably too late now but the Platformer competition seems to be attracting a lot of attention, and seeing as Physics/A.I can be an important part of Platformer's, maybe it would be a good idea to combine the two competitions? There's a few prizes already submitted for the platformer, and having a game theme to base the entry on would help in both the voting and creation stages. Its easier to compare two platformers instead of comparing an FPS and a racing game, it's easier to focus on story and graphical elements when the theme for the game is already chosen).

Then again... my ideas are usually stupid.

@ RUCCUS

I agree having a specific genre of game would make it easier in voting, but then again from what I can make of it, it is the best use of Dark A.I that each game will be judged on.

So hows everybody's entries coming along?

I ask not just out of interest but also to stop this thread disapearing into the darkness.

i don't think i have time to finish my entry. unless it's fun to kill cubes.

my entry will definetly not be something special though, if i actually do get something done.

I don't think anybodys entry will be visualy special due to the limit on file size, just as long as the a.i implementation is good.

Well I will have wasted 8 sleepless nights if they gave the go ahead to combine the two competitions.

I'd prefer it if it was left as it is now. If people dont want to bother entering this competition, its up to them, but I think its a damn good one (and an easy one).

&Rich: please DON'T combine the two competitions, I really dont think my RTS entry could be converted to a platform game easily (without restarting from scratch, obviously).

Edit: All this competition needs is an extra 2 weeks on the deadline. Say, 20th August 2006, that would give people plenty of time to complete their entries.

I have no intention at all of combining the two competitions. The Dark AI is a TGC compo, the platform one is not.

I would consider a deadline increase though if enough people need it.

Thanks for clearing that up Rich.

Quote: "I would consider a deadline increase though if enough people need it."

I could really use that extra 2 weeks, I've restarted my RTS, DarkAI entry and added some new stuff to it, it's really got a long way to go yet as it is only 6MB including the EXE and media.

So far, DarkAI handles RTS units without any pathfinding problems, although sometimes if one unit gets in the way of another, it tends to strafe (which does not look good for a tank) even though the AI Set Entity Can Strafe perameter is set to zero. Im working on a piece of code to create a path to send the unit around the unit which is blocking it at the moment.

A deadline increase would be most appreciated, since a sudden surge of people bought darkai for the contest just this past week. 3 weeks just isn't quite enough for a decent ai showcase when you stil have to learn dark ai.(especially with many people wanting to make an rts)

I myself don't think I can finish by the deadline as is.

Do, or do not. There is no try.

Depends how many entries there are. I'm quite happy to give an extension to the deadline. I will revise my first post in this thread with the new date now.

with the deadline expanded, and me getting the filesize reduced from 30mb to 13mb (zipped) i just might start working on this again

i have some stuff that needs to be done with the game engine, and then i can start on the AI.

for some odd reason, after installing U6.2b newton decides to spin the player around and i can't move. i'll look into this first.

@Chris - a 12Mb file should be no problems for DBP. I've loaded up DDS files which are MUCH larger than that. Just increases the loading time.

What file format are you using?

That's 4.2 million grid sqaures, or 8.4 million polys. I would suggest the problem is your design, not DB Pro or your PC.

Yeah Chris, you can just use a much smaller heightmap and scale it up. A good texture is always better than millions of polygons.

DarkMATTER models = yes.

As for the closing date, I don't care when you start your game, I only care about what you submit.

So we need to upload to this thread or in the new DARK AI forum?

How long will be given for judging purposes, if the winners are to be included in the September issue of the Newsletter?
