can dark basic support any type of .avi file compression

as long as the Codec is installed on the end-users system and is useable in Media Player... yes

for example WindowsXP can't use DivX natively - therefor DarkBasic Can't... you install the DivX Codec and both can use it
For certain examples you don't have to use the codec because you can use a DLL to load it yourself into the backbuffer frame, a good example of this is Bink - however only do that if you can't afford the licence fee, which is pretty cheap
