I read a few tuts about making transparent huds, none of them really worked for me. I learned myself now how to do it.
So this is my way:

Software you need:

- A photo-software that support layers (Phtotoshop, PSP, Gimp etc)
- DXTBmp (Freeware: http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/download/dxtbmpx.EXE)

1.Run your photo-software and start creating your hud.

2.Setup your programme to work in 256-Greyscale colormode.

3.Place text and backround in different layers.

4.Remember that you paint everything that should be transparent
in black, everything that should be visible in white. You can
also play around with grey to make things half-transparent.

5.One you have finished, save the picture in the native format of
ur software (e.g PSD for Photoshop) to keep the layer structure.

6.Now save the picture again, this time in BMP format.

7.Open the saved picture files that contains the layers again
and start to colorize the white areas and texts of the picture
colors u want them to be. Remember not to colorize the black
parts of the picture, they will be invisible later. You should
not change the positions of the layer-objects anymore.

8. Once u have finished editing, save the pic as BMP file.

9. Now open dxtBMP and open the colorized bmp-picture file.

10. Click now on ALPHA -> IMPORT ALPHA and choose the black-and white version of your pic you also saved as BMP file before.

11. Click SAVE AS -> DDS TEXTURE and choose DDS DXT 5 format to save ur hudtexture.

The created dds file is now ready for testing!
