I'm programming a game called Children of Sivara. We are doing a deep slice of the circus level. Anyway, i can't reveal too much, otherwise Minimark (our Project manager) will kill me.

Here's a low-res render of our circus:

http://www34.brinkster.com/idott/random/circus.jpg

Here's a hi-res render of our circus (for us broadband people):

http://www34.brinkster.com/idott/random/circus2.jpg

Please tell me what you think.

P.S. It was modelled by our modeller [moaning] lisa. It was done in 25 hours (textured). And no, she isn't availible to do your game models. She is all ours. Insert evil laugh here

Ooo - that looks nice! Perhaps a little heavy on the polycount for those with low-end computers (like me), but still very impressive!

Can you tell us what genre the game is going to be, or will that result in your premature death at the hands of Minimark?

Havent fixed that link yet Flibs? The game could be classed as a sort of 3rd person adventure game where you travel to various parts of the world during the 19th century. The circus is just one of the stops along the way. We are currently under intellectual property contracts, but are hoping to have some web space assigned to us soon. As soon as that happens we will be able to release a few more details, and will post a link somewhere on the forums. Thanks for the positive feedback and hopefully Flibs will fix his links so more people can get to see the images.

That's a nice-looking elephant! However, I would recommend tweaking the lighting of the tent a bit - it looks a little dull at the moment...

When you think about it, that is what a circus tent would look light, light wise. In the day anyway

rapscaLLion: yeah, you see in the render that there are lights with mirrors on top of them? That how they used to light them. I'm gonna eventually have some nice sphere mapping on them

Kjetil: No, no really. We are using a program called Animation Master to do our models, and it has some really good animation helpers. Oh, and if you see the elephant walking, you'll notice it actually has 3 bones in its legs (an extra one for the knee so it looks like it bends properly)

I'll post some more pics today

Wow, we have completely outdone ourselves. We did a texture bake in 3DS Max and re-exported our objects, so now they have precalculated shadows on them and they look soooooooo good. Here are some IN GAME screenies:

It looks really cool with the soft shadows!

Why not? I expect my game to take well over a year and I'm going to distribute it free, even though I need to buy DBPro just to finish it.

As for the circus, that looks really cool! Apart from the elephant casting no shadow and the edges around the thin poles, it's almost looks like a render! Can't wait to see it in real-time!

Sorry about the links at the top, they're on my old site and don't allow external access.

Dr DooMer: The reson that there are no shadows on the elephant is becaus there are NO LIGHTS! All the shadow effects are pre-rendered. As for the aliasing, that is becaus ei haven't put antialiasing on.

Redostrike: Are you nuts??? Of course it aint gonna be free! We are making it as a professional game!

Thanks for all the positive feedback though. I should be able to put up some more screenies soon.

Mr. Flibble, I know there's no dyanmic lights yet! I was just saying that, if it wasn't for the elephant and the edges, it could be mistaken for a render. Keep up the good work!

EnchantisoftStudios: yeah, i know. The textures mapping on the elephant is still W.I.P. There are lots of little patches of colour where we had no texture, so we are goin to re-map it.

We should be able to get some more models up soon. We should have some screenies up soon, with wagons and stuff

Unfortunately clowns are a bit further down on the list for production, we are still working on the main character and the ringmaster is next I believe. Also will be concentrating on getting the user interface and AI under development. We do have a clown tent with a nice clown on it though, But that is being re-textured as it came out to cartoony. I'm sure Flibs might do a render for you. You awake Flib's? We only have till August until our funding runs dry and we need results. So now we have a basic concept of our level modelled our attention is diverted into getting only a couple of extra characters into the level, cleaning everything up and making it work the way we want, and maybe if time prevails a 30sec trailer. If we get a clown modelled though we will be sure to post it.

Seriously, melbourne.

Hehehe, clowns have a special place in my warped heart yes, as a red dwarf fan you should understand that Did you ever see 'the Night of the Killer Clowns?' It's about these aliens who happen to look like clowns and their "flying saucer" is a clown tent much like the one in your render, the clowns come to earth to eat people, hilarious film

I'm looking forward to seeing your game too, not just for the clowns

last piccies not showing
best way to add alot of depth on object textures is to bake the uv's as you've done, but rather than simply combining, what you do is draw on or merge the detail - the overlay the main texture - airbrush in the slight colour changes and then go over the features with the airbrush and paintbrush to make them stand out
gives alot of character that way ... so rather than things being photographic and lifeless, you've create a vibrant texture which makes the object stand up and be more real.

its far better job than standard lighting could ever do, because then you can use the minimanl of lights just to add highlights and shaodows where needed to add the realism in scene
