Organic Modelling's reign of terror has to an end for the less organic ones out there.
(Congrats to Higgins, the winner)
Theme requirements are:

Quote: "You have to model 10 urban objects (not characters or animals). You have to use them to build a scene.

They must be low poly game models. So try to keep the poly count low, no more than 1000 polys. The lower the count would be more ideal, but keeping the overall detail to a high.

Objects can be buildings, lamp posts, mail boxes etc.

The scene has to be rendered inside a game engine. It can be any engine of your choice, be it Dark Basic or the Quake Engine etc, its up to you.

As usual no past models are allowed to be entered, so if you have urban models on your system, you can not use them, you must create new ones."

well, it says you should show it in a game engine and since you can use DBPro, i'd say that yes you can

edit: ten objects in 1000 polys? 100 polys a model? you're not serious are you?

I don't have a sig, live with it.

Its bit unclear that one. I would say I think its 1000 per model, 10,000 polies it alright for a scene I'd say. I'll need Higgins to clarify that one, if its 1000 for the scene. 100 polies per model would be rather challenging .

MC its down to your game engine mate, however the focus is on the models, shaders are just there to make things look pretty.

It is no more than 1000 polys pair object, so you infact have 10,000 polys to use.

Of course, anything you make is yours and whatever you wish to do with it is up to you.

[edit] I wouldn't bash this, CGTalk are doing a '30 days 30 objects' challenge, where you have to make an object a day, you could say the same idea applies here.

It has to look like an urban setting, so having an indoor scene wont tell us if it is urban or not. Maybe you can pull it off though, but its a better idea to model outdoor objects.

I think you should be allowed to model background scenary and not have them count as any of the 10 objects. As long as you point out which 10 objects where modelled for the contest, then its fine to use other stuff to make the scene look realistic.

Do you agree on this Musashi?

Is it steam driven or pedal power?
I didn't realise people still used floppy drives, I thought they were long term residents at silicon care home.

Background shouldn't count for scenery, the poly count should only apply for entry objects.

Urban - does that mean contemporary only, or is urban-historical, or urban-futuristic also allowed?

i know, just being a smartass.

how much time do we have for this? i spent my time today with google code challenge.

ok, here's something new. Just did it the last 10 minutes, so its not gonna get any more recent.

oh i had a question, is the challenge just to make objects or a whole scene?

tree - 56 polys
dumpster - 40
mailbox - 80

Contest ends on the 14th, extra details are in the first link of my first post, which are update per contest.

I see you were being a smartass, would have notice sooner if I read post

Its a good start mate, if you manage to keep that low poly with effective work, I think it will work to your advantage.

Just remember its not a poly limit of 1000 on the whole scene, but a poly limit of 1000 on each object. Other scene objects, not including the 10 objects you pick to model, can be any poly limit, as they are not being judged and should not be judged by voters.

It's USB powered...but I still use Floppies so hah! THat shows that people do still use them...if I can be considered a people. ANYWAY, now my computer is freezing before it even gets past the Windows XP screen...oddly enough my brother got the computer for me we were trying to get now...so really, I'm starting fresh except same Hard Drive, maybe re-install the OS if problems carry over...but yeah...I'm missing this contest for sure(also gotta purchase 512MB DDR PC-2700 333 MHZ Ram)

Current scene is 544 polys, but I might add a few more to make the trolly a little more shapely.

Well if less people are interested, then I'd better think up of a gimmick...I'll see if I can tickle people's generous spot for free prizes, doubt I'd succeed unless I was doing a charity event, but no harm in trying.

we;; high poly is tons o fun but contests like these test what you can do with each poly. (though 1000 polys for an urban model is a pretty good amount.) idk if i get a chance ill enter. Maybe ill pull a last minute .

I would, first I'll think what I personally can offer, my tutorials are free, the 3 community models I've made are free, I have no games, so I could create a few model packs that would be good to give away in these contest...first I'll sort out my Open GL problem (As it is effecting my modelling)

My computer has started spontaneously freezing(think I mentioned it somewhere) again, so my WIP is lost to the eternal shadows of...well...my glitchy computer. Until I get it fixed, that is. Chkdsk didn't seem to do it, so I think the video card is giving me hell again.

I know your pain, at the time I was modelling sephiroth for a competition, then he being my most proud piece of work, something like that happened the day I was going to finish off just before the deadline...Pure evil.

As nobody has entered, I'll give people until MONDAY or TUESDAY to get their entries in, if there is none by then and no sign of interest, then I will have to call this a failure and choose the next contest myself.

I'm already in contest trying to win Bodypaint, if I do ever stop using it, then maybe, but unless I feel that generous, I doubt i will ever.

As for the current prizes, I've got too much on my agenda - A levels, Orc, Game, learning XSI and finding a job.

Yeah I've noticed the contest participation too, but i think it has to do with the subjects chosen. Themes work so much better than specific and fairly mundane things. Think back to the "face of beauty" contest. That was great!!

ya i think it was this contests subject that drove people off. I think people would do it if the topic wasn't so, i'll put it bluntly, boring. I would rather model a dragon that could smash buildings in a single swipe of giant claws then the actual buildings themselves. No offense to Higgins. I think that people should could up with ideas for the next one and then we could we vote on those ideas for the next contest.
