what is the easiest way to convert binary .x files to the other type and vice versa???

The only tool I know that lets you specify is the Panda .X exporter for 3dsMax. Everything else I have used just exports to whatever mode it chooses too, even 3D Exploration.

The command line exporter from Microsoft lets you choose what format you want to export .3ds to; but it won't alter existing .x files, I'm afraid.

Milkshape can load simple .X meshes and materials and export in text or binary.
