This is a link to a 3d animated desktop program with a free demo.
I'm run at 1280x1020 and it looks great. The demo comes with 4 scenes but there very long and just look amazing.

Cute. But yeah, just get an animated gif for your background. Or put a screensaver as your background. There has been code on the web for years to put a screensaver as a background (saw lots of VB code around 5 years ago). Nice screensavers though.
