making a good design is a lot about something visually appealing to the eye as well as easy to use since the key principle is an interface design.

In contrast with this abstract skill you also have to have a logical grounding to help develop a navigation system into this design, while conforming to all the browsers.

art meets the browser.

If u build a site and work up to a design without a concept on paper or a photoshop image or some image indicating the layout, it will always look half baked in ways.

When making a design think about some basic concepts

art design
colour harmony and vibration
shape and line
positive space and negative space

tech
navigation ease of use

Sometimes it can take a while to develop your own style and it will grow as you develop more artwork.

Have a look at a site called webpagesthatsuck or things of this nature.

Large Images and Huge Titles are always a dead give away.

IT can take a bit of thinking to compress the content you have into the space you have allocated but always looks neater if this process is managed carefully.

Once u have worked out most html commands start on some dynamic content with Perl or php perhaps.

The Black art of interace design should be a book

Imma pick it apart...^_^

First of all, black background with a white foreground kinda clash... You'll notice on this webspace..the colors kinda come together.. How's that? You see white lines along blue tables, and it all kind of melds together.. I learned the best way to create a webpage is to copy the design of another^_^ Change it to suit your needs of course..

Red white and blue is kind of icky on black also.. You should almost never use frames, they look tacky imho... The links to other parts of the page were hard to find...

I'm sorry if this seems mean in any way..im just trying to help out...

I find that it's better to look at pages done the right way to see how it's done.. So I'll show ya mine.. LOL i know, i know...mine prolly has many descrepencies on the proper way of doing a webpage..but I figured I'll give you my method of how I created it.. I wrote it by hand in HTML using aranae..that rich pointed me to in one of these posts... I think it is rather good and everyone I've showed it to likes it.. So here goes...

http://galileo.spaceports.com/~jerico

Ok...I modele'd mine from Google... I used colors that even a person using 256 colors would be able to navigate... Not really cuz I thought there'd be a lot of people using 256 color desktops, but the colors seemed to go well together...

Blue on white is a really nice combo...look at this site..a lot of sites use blues..

Use tables to get things to line up juuust right...

I used a few different layouts for the different sections to kind of break up the monotany... you can or cannot do this.... Feel free to critique my site too, I'll take all the suggestions i can get^_^
