I am making a Battlestar Galactica Viper pilot sim game. It is much more close to the way space fights are depicted in the new SciFi TV series.

Its a post bloom effect that I picked up from this site. If you have ever seen the show, they use a very similar effect in most of the space scenes.

Cool. I love Battlestar Galactica. This looks really cool, and the ship model is excellent.

BTW - Why is your name Gaius (Its actually spelled Guyus) Baltar? He's evil in a disgusting and annoying way. I certainly wouldn't want to be associated with him.

Keep up the good work and please release a demo soon...

...or no more Mr nice Guyus!

- definitely one of the best quotes from the series...

I think Gaius is a great character, he's so flawed. And that is a great quote!!! But it is spelled Gaius. Check SciFi.com. And a demo should be available pretty soon.

I am still having to wait various lengths of time to post, due to my being new here. So you'll have to excuse the time between my posts.

That is great! I was planning on making my space sim for the Nvidia comp, and then modding it to fit bsg=D I love that show with a passion.

i'm a huge fan of the older series, it was great. havn't seen the newer series, but my friends say it's as addicting as Stargate SG-1...which i also love. Looking nice, will we have some scion to shoot at in the demo?

Whoops . When I searched "Gaius Baltar", it told me to try "Guyus Baltar". I must have spelled it incorrectly. I don't really know what I did.
Sorry

Gaius Baltar I have a question about the camera is your outside camera "still" or if you turn left it shifts left?

p.s I leave my B5:Space Sim pic

Jna99 - Great looking still my friend, as for my outside camera... It faces the center of the object, and if you manuver the craft, the camera will not rotate, but does continue to track its position.

Because it is a Sim game, the outside camera is not used in combat, you can either choose the cockpit, or hud.

Note- The cockpit screenshot that I have is of a temp cockpit, the one I am working on is much more realistic, and close to what appears in the show.

Gaius my first version was using the same type of camera, probl is that if you don't have an outside reference you dont seem to be turning, so I started implementing a moving camera...the first was 10 LOC the second was 500 LOC...still your pics look great keep up the good work and if you have time try implement a moving camera its a lot of trouble but the results are astonishing!

Oh I forgot how many fps?

Nice! What is that object that glows? I have a question: How are you doing the camera? It looks like it follows at different angles.

Steve J - The glowing object is a star. At this angle it's hard to see it. As for the camera, it follows a target object, in this case the ship, and I can hold down a mouse button and rotate around the object, and then with the scroll I can zoom in and out.

Very cool, I hope you add and tweak all the thrusters so they act just like in the show, I love how they use the momentum to attack things, rarely seen in sci-fi series , make sure you put a bunch of toasters in there too .

Dark coder the thruster is not very difficult problem is having camera act in a way that doesn't interfere with the movement...

dark coder - I have the game working as seen on the TV show. I understand what you mean when you say they use their momentum unlike Star Wars or Star Trek. In this game you can thrust in one direction, and then with the RCS(Reaction Control System) turn you ship around 360 degrees and still keep your forward momentum. Like you see in the show, you can be running from a ship, and turn around backwords to take some shots at it, while still keeping your forward momentum.

Kentaree - Yes I have two modes for the RCS, a computer assisted RCS, and unassisted. If your ship were to be damaged, you may lose computer assistance.

It takes around 1 to 2 weeks, if you don't do anything stupid. I'm sure they trust you, but everyone has to go through those few weeks even if the MODS think that you are the most trustworthy person on the planet.

Here is the start of the HUD for the game. It's very basic right now, but the finished product will be a bit more polished. I will be releasing a very simple demo in a week or two.

I suppose I better start working on a site.

Gaius - Great work thus far! I am a huge fan of the new BSG series, haven't seen an episode that I haven't loved. Your work looks really nice and realistic, it would be sweet to see this turn out like it does in the series. I was wondering, were you going to add camera shake when you accelerate? Oh, and if you haven't already done so, get EZRotate, you are gonna need it on this expedition

Thank you for the comment Tommie.

Alquerian - Thanks for the comments as well, actually that is something that I didn't even consider(Camera Shaking). I will most certainly have to work on that, it is a major part of flight in the show. Thanks for the input.

New episode of BSG tonight! Gaius, get this a bit higher quality (trust me, not that much more, right now it is amazingly great gfx), and you might go to SCI-FI and ask them to sponsor the game, and help sell it. Cant wait for the Demo!

Just got done watching the new episode. I must say I am ready to do some more coding/modeling. Thanks for the comments Steve J. I will be posting some shots of the Lion's Head Nebula in the coming days.

Dared1111 - Well in space there is no friction due to the lack of pressure, so if you pitch your ship upward via the RCS, it would continue to thrust up unless you were to counter thrust. The Computer Assist mode will automaticly counter thrust for you, also the Computer Auto Stop will automaticly stop your ship. Think of it as the RCS Computer Assist is an auto rotational stop, and the Computer Stop Assist is an auto linear stop. The Gents on the Apollo 13 could have used it.

Gaius, the New Episode was the only one so far that didnt have gaius as a main character! I cant wait to see the Lions Head Nebula! Is the storyline going to be tv based, or your own?

Dared111 - I am dreading making any autmospheric flight... So in the first couple version there will not be any land attacks.

Steve J - The storyline will be my own, however the main version of this game is Multiplayer, the single player will only be a small tutorials.

very impressive shots,

The idea of space flight "fighting" deems to have its own special real world tactics for when we as humans get up there to duel it out.

Looking very nice , allways loved the design of the old Mk2, and I too am making a space sim, however it's for the Nvidia compo, and not based on bsg, hope to see some demos of this soon, as I played the bsg mod for bf2 and that was awsome, flying with 0 grav and blowing the crap out of vipers/raiders, fun times shame they had missiles though :/.

Indi - Very true.

dark coder - I very much like the MK2s as well. I will have a demo out soon enough.

I will have some screenshots of the Lions Head Nebula up in the next few days. Also I am working on the sound effects, which is giving me a larger fit than I thought it would. Very hard to find/produce some Battlestaresque sound effects.

Dared1111 - That is something that I had not considered, turning this project into a group one, however for the game's sake that may be a good idea. I will be hitting the code and media hard tonight to try and produce some screenshots of the Lions Head Nebula, and getting the demo up and going. Once I release the demo, we'll see what happens. Don't tell anyone, but I am at work right now... Check back tonight for the screenshots. Also thank you very much for the offer, and I may have to take you up on it.
