Doom Fan Game II

As many of you probally already know, awhile back I released an FPSC game called Doom Fan Game. It recreated the first to levels of classic doom, complete with a new texture for Colonel X to be the zombie (generosly donated) and even an Imp capable of throwing fireballs. It clocked 947 downloads (beta had 197) and some good feedback from several forum members (including in the form of e-mail). Now, I've decided, after months of off-and-on work on the core elements and a little bit on the remade level, that I'd post a WIP. This version, while containing new and more weapons, along with many more levels, is not intended to accuratly recreate any of Classic Doom's levels. Many will bare resemblence, especially the first level, but will not be recreated the same way as the first. And this one will have lightmapping

What's Done so Far
Begun Level 1
Added Pistol & Shotgun from JDoom Resource Pack
Modified Chaingun to fit Doom Theme
Added Pickups for Chaingun & Shotgun (from JDRP)
Modified Imp's Fireball Attack to be less oppresive
Added new objects (Barrel, Lamp, Bonus Health Pickup)
Cool Bonus Health System - Normal health packs only heal to 100, bonus to 200
New Hud, Menu System, and Utilizing Save/Load (GUI Elements from JDGUI Pack)
Some other stuff...

For anybody who wants it, here is the download link to the orignal Doom Fan Game I made:
http://files.filefront.com/Doom_Fan_Game_Updated/;4620773;;/fileinfo.html

Here's the orignal thread, the Doom Fan Game website (which orignally linked to the download) is currently down, but you may find some random screenshots in there:

I haven't played the first one but I've seen screenies. I have to say this second one looks far better by the screenies.

Awsome, Rick posted in my thread!

@Nigezu - Yep, the other one wasn't the best, I refused (stupidly) to add lightmapping, which really cut down the quality. Plus, this one has better level design, and won't use just 'Control Room' segments.

@FredP - Hope you have fun, Level 2 might be laggy though, my attempts to make it more 'optimized' only brought more lag, something I won't do again

@Mikey spike - Doom 3D? Every doom has been 3d though, that doesn't really seem to fit. Plus, Doom Fan Game is a fine enough name for me

Here's a pic of the main menu background compared to the orignal, the JDoom GUI pack really did a good job:

The one on the left (From the JDGUI Pack) had to be shrunk down to 50%, and the one on the right (from Classic Ultimate Doom) wasn't resized at all!

Not a bad little game. can I ask a question? Your first Doom game (and several other different games) is one exe file with the ability to define keys, how did you do that? Is it some other program?

Thanks...I guess

I've been playing with my AI and using it here - the enemies seem to work really well with it. I figured I don't need to use anything other than the default throw script (slightly modified) for the IMP, but I may add a new portion of my script pack to deal with throwing things, which may be good for the IMP. We'll see.

Actually it's far from it. While I do have Errant's model (trade), that one is from the JDoom resource pack. If you look in the Nvidia comp board I have screens with his model in it, compare and you'll see a definent diffrence.

Thanks.

I've ran into a bit of a headache. FPSC keeps crashing whenever it gets to 'Saving and Optimizing Universe...'. Maybe a nice restart will help, though I won't be able to work on it till tomorrow. If all else fails, I'll try deleting the new section I added, and if THAT doesn't work, then well, may have to restart the level. Uggg...

Nickydude - By the way, if you plan on using Save/Load, FPS Pack isn't compatible with it. Prehaps later it will, but the current version doesn't work with Save/Load.

Looks cool, though the imp looks very.. forked up. lol
If you've got the imp from the resource pack in md2-format or any other milkshape-compatible format, could you send it over? I'm thinking about trying to apply the FPSC standard skeleton to it to see how it looks (it would obviously need some animation-adjustments to act like the original imp).

Btw, I've also got my own rendition of the tech-pillar and some lamp-posts lying around. If you want to, I can send them over.

Oh dark, the darkness that dozes in the dusk. Throw it all away. No one can break you, nobody can tear you. You live an endless life forever.

No, it doesn't, that is just a launcher

@Roger Wilco - it is applied to the FPSC skeleton already. I suppose it could be better though - got to doomsdayhq.com and download the resource pack, you can find it (along with all the other models I'm using) in there. I'm going to modify the rig for the Imp I already have, try and make it a bit better. It isn't exactly lined up. Then I'll modify the gernade throw animation to look more like the Imp's fireball throwing flames.

Prehaps I can release the 'new' resource pack too, I'll just have to find some way to get in touch with the JDRP team for permission, they seem to be a bit - er - inactive

It look great but what you should also consider doing is retexturing those walls what I would do is while playing doom print screen near a wall then while in Photoshop or gimp or whatever select paste then select the wall then rescale it to fill the whole picture then save a copy put of it on to a segment wall then you will have a doom wall texture

The world is complicated only people are simple

Well, I thought of using Doom walls (I can just get in the WAD, makes life easier and better quality) but truth is, they are pretty low resolution, and I'm trying to aim for higher graphical quality. There are some hi-res texture packs on line I think, but I've had trouble finding one that is in a format I can use/extract from.

This fan game brings such cool memories back for me. The first time I saw Doom I was gob-smacked! It was such a leap in quality and it just stopped everyone in their tracks. Not many games do that and I doubt there will be many more to make such leaps. I spent many hours playing Doom, I can't say I was good at it but I enjoyed it.

It was Doom that made me dream that one day I'd get away from making Rally games and Educational games to make a First Person Shooter - this dream resulted in FPSC!

Actually, to NOT have there name would more or less a problem, by having it there I acknolege that it was orignally their game.

@Rick - Ya, I doubt there will be any more huge tech leaps, mainly because everything is done little by little almost uniformly...

I was making pong clones and word games in basic and machine language when someone showed me Doom. I must have played the original 100 times, and I still have a copy.

Your fan game 1 brought back good memories but it was too short. I hope this one plays longer and I'm waiting for it.

Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

Thanks

Hopefully I'll have at LEAST 5 levels, though I'm aiming for 10. The Nvidia comp is really tugging at my ankle, so I don't have much time, but usually I can get a few hours off every few days enough to make some progress - now if only I can figure out the problem with the addon to the level...

I used to have an original copy of Doom, I've since lost it, though I bought the Collectors edition a few weeks before Doom 3 came out (the first and only game I've ever reserved ) which had Final Doom, which I had never played before. My favorite version has to be the XBOX one though that comes with Doom 3 Collector's Edition & the Doom 3 expansion pack (for xbox).
