3 Dimensional Chat / To Triangulate or not

This may have been asked before ,Do models have to be triangulated
I know some export formats do this automatically others do not.
I really just would like to know the reason for this?

yes they do need to be... reason is the 3D Hardware works on Triangle Geometry only, this has nothing to do with DirectX, OpenGL, DarkBasic etc...

the Hardware itself only calculates and renders Triangles

simple enough explaination?
