Welcome to the February/March Edition of the FPSCreator Level Design Competition. This month's theme is: Terrorism.

Here are the rules:

- Custom Media is encouraged and may be awarded extra points if it fits in well enough

- No stealing or pirating media. We will not accept your entry if it is discovered that you pirated media or broke a license agreement.

- Your level must be a compiled exe or an installer/FPSPack. Installers are encouraged. Maximum file size is 250 MB.

- Your level must have a storyline which is easily viewed while ingame, not just a text file you include with your entry. You may display this ingame storyline anyway you wish..

- Forum rules DO apply.

- The start of this contest begins the moment you finish reading this post; the Deadline is April 1st (2007). Any entries received after 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time (23:59 for the rest of the world) on Arpil 1st, will NOT be considered for this contest...NO EXCEPTIONS will be made.

*Some basic criteria (what the judges will look for):

- Level Design (how well your level is layed out, and flows)

- Custom Media (this includes art and sound)

- Believability. Does it look realistic? Would someone really make a big room with one or two objects in it?

- Originality in story

- Professionalism. Does it have an installer with a license/readme? Does it have a custom icon and a manual?

- Custom Sounds. Is there custom sound effects? This does not include music.

- Best Soundtrack. How catchy is the music? How annoying/obnoxious is the music? Is it suspenseful? Does it fit the scene?

- GamePlay (your frame-rate is a factor)

- Completeness (does your level have a clear beginning and end)

- Menu System (is the menu original, or standard)

This is a generic list of the requirements the judges will be given (their list will be more detailed). Each category is worth 5 points each; except the Believability category, which is worth 10 points. After all the results are in, each entrant's points will be added up; the highest score wins

Some items may be modified on this list, but nothing major.

You may now BEGIN.

NOTES: Silent Thunder will discuss prizes and judges.

Hmmmmm. Well I do need the practice (obvioulsy) so I'll be entering again.

Question- Given that you two are not mods, I'm assuming one of the model packs will not be available as a prize? Is this assumption correct?

The model packs are like all of the other prizes. They are donated by the kind forum members who support the level design competition through their donations.Somebody may donate a model pack and they may not.
TGC does not contribute to the level design competition in any way.

I guess they make it possible, so that has to be worth something.

fpsFREE.com will donate one model pack of the winners choosing. (1-6 or the Sprite Pack)

Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

Hey guys, don't take this the wrong way or anything but isn't the person who wins the previous month's competition supposed to select the theme for the following month?

I appreciate your running the competition but i think you've jumped the gun a little bit.

You know what? Zaibatsu and I completely forgot about that.

You are absolutely right though, I don't know exactly how Zaibatsu is running the compo, but what theme would you like instead?

I thought the sci-fi was AE's suggestion!
Yup, it would be much better for the winner to decide on the theme.

So since the theme actually hasn't been chosen yet, does that mean the competition hasn't actually started? Because that wouldn't make sense at all.

AE, we need your input.

i don't know. it depends on what AE has to say.

April 1st is still a long way away so i don't see the point in starting the competition again. Therefore, just the theme will be changed. This month's theme is Terrorism!

This could come in a variety of forms; perhaps you are leading a squad in to a village in the middle East in the hunt for terrorists, or perhaps your mission is to escape an embassy after terrorists have taken control. The choice is yours.

But beware, Terrorism is a fairly easy theme to do adequetely but very difficult to do well. Custom media could earn you valuable extra points.

My only additional level criteria point would be that, at some point during your mission/level, you make contact with a/the terrorist(s). This could be physically, or on radio/TV but as long as you make contact with them, you will be obeying this rule.

Enjoy,
AE

P.S. Because i selected the theme, i shall not enter this month so good luck to all who do!

Hi

Now what makes you think you can't have terrorism in a sci fi setting? You guys sound disappointed but just think about it for a liitle bit. Lots of great sci fi movies are centered around terrorism and rebellion. Combine the two if your heart was set on sci fi.

As i said:
Quote: "Terrorism is a fairly easy theme to do adequetely but very difficult to do well."

I want people to think outside the box. Stereotypical terrorism doesn't usually make a great game, nor an original storyline. Sure, why not set it in the future? Or in the past? (Suicide Centurians...?) Remember, originality wins you marks.

@ filya:
I thought it did. I thought if you selected the theme, you would have an unfair advantage and so would not be allowed to enter. It matters little, since i'm going to try an concentrate on my WWII weapon pack for now and will be too tied up to make a level.

However, i would like to be judge for this one.

perhaps that come out wrong or was taken wrong oops )
i mean there are a lot of longtime fpsc members here
and perhaps you would consider a 2 tier system for all the
noobs like me ) so they dont feel intimidated by the pros.
ime sure there would be more people wanting to do some level
for fun but are a bit shy against some of the more talented
members respecfully .

Since there were only three legitimate entries last time a two tiered system wouldn't work well.If the people that are running the competition use the same criteria that we used then then newcomers or less experienced still have a chance to win.
Given that there were only three entries last time you probably have a chance to win something anyways.

yes. I encourage new people to enter, as it serves as good practice, and the judges (experienced users) can tell you what to improve on.

No objectives as such but you must make contact with your terrorists at some point during the level, whether this be by actually encountering them or getting a radio/tv message. I could even be an E-Mail.
