We've finished Beta 2 for Revenge (the LAN multiplayer fps my group Bio Fox started a while ago) and it is definitely looking better than Beta 1 in my opinion. The errors we found in beta 1 were fixed and a few more maps and technically things were added. Also, I programed a "dynamic" file loading system which will read all the map info from text files. No more hard coding maps!

You will notice that the movement for opponents is jerky at times, and we apologize; it still needs to be smoothed out. Other than that, menus and character animations are really going to be our main focus. Remember to type in your LAN ip address and the right one, or it won't load the maps correctly.

[EDITED march 21 2007]
100% complete!

Download it here(Revenge): http://www.biofoxgames.com/revenge.php

We've added a lot since my last update, including a auto-ip so you don't need to know your ip, player angles that show front, sides, and back, shooting and getting hurt animations, dead bodies, new/redone maps, and new weapons. I'll be uploading a new image of the chainsaw as well.

Expect Revenge to be done very soon since menus are all we need done.

Well, considering it's a DOOM type game, we wanted it to look like DOOM. And though the graphics are low key, the game play is a lot better.

The graphics is very... special. And somehow I like it. Even if it's not pretty. Anyway, it's the inside, not the outside, that determines if it's a good game. Haven't tested it, but I'll do that later today.

Tried the game.It may look old school from the outside, but it plays much better then one. Its a smooth game with a very good fps.
One thing though, the guns they are good all but the chain gun.
It looks as though it were pointing upwards, try making the front smaller.

I figured I'd just ignore his comments considering his join date

Thanks for the comments guys, we've been at this game for about a year (learning multiplayer and fps handling mostly); glad to see the effort paid off!

What you don't see in the screen shots is the angles of the characters. If you've played DOOM, you'll know that the enemies had different images of each angle, so when you moved around them it would so a different side. If any of you test Revenge between two computers, I think you'll be impressed by it.

@fxgamer
We've had that issue for both the chain gun and the chainsaw, in fact the chaingun is on it's third redo. I'll see what our designer can do about it. Actually, do you think it would look better as the current image being the regular position and a more angle one being shooting?

@Mr X
The server was down when you tried (doing some stuff with it), so you can try it now and it'll work.

[EDIT]
Beta 3 is now uploaded on our site, it has all the features that are listed on the first post!

I like it... It has a great artistic value, however, i'd like to see a bit more in the way your levels are made, they are all kinda... blocky... you could have crazy hardcore levels and still keep that retro feel with a newer sort of style on it... just a thought...

Me too. All I get when I host a game (I tried to LAN against myself using both the computers at home) was a black screen and some low music in the background. But nothing else. And I waited for some time.

@Benjamin
How far do you get, is it right after you type 2 and press enter? If it is after you choose a color, than I bet it is the ip batch file not working. If you could, check to see what is in the ip.txt. Also, what OS are you running, since ipconfig doesn't work on all of microsoft's OS's.

@Nemesis_0_ Unfortunately, the way we make the maps is pretty simple since we wanted most of original DOOM structure. Do you suggest adding different terrain objects like explosive barrels barrels and what not would add to the game?

As a matter of fact I thought that because the output was in French there would be a problem when trying to retrieve the IP address from the file. This is that output:

If the IP address is just for THost you can pass 0.0.0.0 as the IP address.

Okay, I fixed it how you said. Don't know why I tried to do it the hard way when 0.0.0.0 works fine. Oh well, it should work for you and Mr X now, assuming he had the same problem.

It works now. Well done. But there is an small bug in it. If you open three maps after each other, you get an error about a file that is already open. Other then that, it's well done.

That's exactly what we want to see, so feel free to mod Revenge all you want. We'll even be releasing a tutorial to create your own maps later on.

@Mr X
I'll check it out, should be an easy fix.

@Benjamin
We've wanted this too, the only thing stopping us is the lack of a way to check for online games as a list. Would it be worth putting in online play if you had to join by ip only?

I've hit a problem in the internet. I use TRegisterGame to give players the map info and time/frag limit, however, it says that this is defaulted for LAN. Is there a way to change this?

The newest download has the fixed version which doesn't get that error.

I started writing the internet connection, but I'm having some trouble making it work well. What we'll probably do is release a finished version without internet play and update it later (there are two new projects we want to start after a year with this game).

@Kieran
Haha, everyone has their opinion on our "special" graphics. We didn't spend nearly as much time perfecting them as we did with the coding. For our two future projects, graphics are on the top of our improvements list. Thanks for trying it out.

We've set a release date for this wednesday (3 days). Not sure if it'll be met perfectly, but the menus are just about done. Also, I'll post a video of a match some time before then.

@fxgamer
For now, Revenge will come with a txt file that explains how to make your own maps. It's a bit complicated and might not make a lot of sense, but until I can make an editor, that's what we have.

Revenge is done for all intensive purposes, we finished the menus today and I plan to do some testing today and recording of a match. Tomorrow's the big release day!

Some screen shots of the menus. Thanks to k0shi for making the scroll box.

Im dling right now.I might not be able to try the online yet but still....

edit:
I found two bugs/glitches/what ever.

First off, for some reason the chainsaw shoots.. it shoots far.

Second this isnt really a glith but on the map with the grey bars
when you shoot in between them it apears on the air.Try making the bars an actual model instead.

For the chainsaw, are you talking about the bullet holes going too far or actually hitting someone with the chainsaw? Also, the bars problem isn't really a bug, because it's just a plain with hidden parts so the bullets appear to be in the air. Thanks for pointing them out.

I have just tested it, and it's very nice. But there is a problem when selecting a map. You van't click on the map and press "start" or something, you still do it the "old" way. And that's a bit annoying.

But otherwise, there is no problem that I've found that no one else have found.

Great work.

I'm back from Chicago, glad to see people posting. First, the maps menu. I had trouble making it easy since I don't know any good way to do click able text in a scroll box. If someone would like to help me, I can send you the code (it's also in the code base).

@fxgamer
It's as simple as changing a number. Once we have enough changes for an update, it'll be reduced.

@Jack
Thanks, and yes; this is completely moddable. As I think about it, has anyone looked at the mod guide I wrote up. I know it's very blocky and probably confusing, but until I get an editor out, you'll have to use the guide for map modding and ect.

As a side note, our group, Bio Fox, turned one year old yesterday (march 24th).

Yea, we use BioMap, which is our primeval map editor. It's not really an editor as it is a block of code we put in the game that reads a txt file to make the map. Once I make the Revenge editor, you will be able to make maps without the hassle of using a text editor.
