Los Mineros - 2D Platform Adventure
(So named because I thought of it during Spanish class one day!)

Basic Idea:
You are a professional caver and miner. Your goal is to explore deep caves, search abandoned mines, and swim through subterranean lakes in search of gems, ores, and treasure.
It's sort of like a 2-D, platforming RPG. You gather items, use tools to gain access to deeper levels and items, and even hire a team of other cavers to help you. There isn’t much of a storyline, though there may be quests that provide small, individual stories in themselves.
As for use of Box2D, it would be quite helpful in making ropes - which are a central part of the game play - and the obvious falling, jumping, and the like.

Game play:
Game play centers on the team you bring with you. Each other member of the team would be a specialist in a certain area - see below for a complete list. Certain members with certain skills may be required to access certain areas. Team members would also aid by belaying you and each other, carrying extra supplies and treasure, and the like.
At the beginning of the game, you would start out as just a normal caver, with no special skills. You would have to take a large team with you to fully explore certain areas. However, as the game goes on and you earn more money, you can pay (a fairly large amount) to become trained in one of the fields. You can be trained in as many fields as you wish, but you have to pay a large fee for each one.
The classes would not "level" as such, but they would gain experience and you would be able to use the skills associated with them faster and more efficiently if you had a higher experience number.

Team members:
Diver - Can stay longer underwater and move quickly there
Demolitions Expert - Can use dynamite to dig much faster than you could with a pick and shovel.
Climber - Climbs rocks faster, is good with rope
Geologist -
Mechanic - Can fix objects such as mine carts, tracks, and machinery

If you were Diver, Demolitions Expert, or Mechanic, you would have to carry certain equipments to use certain skills. Divers would have to carry fins to actually swim faster in the water, though they can always stay underwater for longer than other people due to their training. The demolitions expert would, of course, have to carry explosives and something to light them with. The mechanic would usually need his toolkit to perform repairs.
The climber and the geologist are unique classes in that their skills require no special gear. The climber just climbs faster and ties ropes better. I haven't determined what the geologist's exact skills are, or even if it will actually be in the game, but I think it will have something to do with finding more rare minerals, selling them for a slightly larger amount, etc.

As in most RPGs, there are some traits you can put "points" into to gain certain advantages. However, as there are no levels as such, and you do not gain more "points" to add as you play. Instead, the skills slowly gain points with use.

Traits:
Agility - Increases your overall movement speed and jumping height, and reduces falling damage
Dexterity - Climb faster, tie ropes faster, and anything else that requires fine use of the fingers
Strength - Increase the weight you can carry in items, increases the amount of ground you can dig with each stroke, and increase your endurance (amount of time you can run for without resting).
Charisma - Reduce the cost of hiring team members, gain a little more money when selling things and pay a little less when buying

I’m open to all suggestions and comments at this stage, so tell me what you think.

Los Mineros are back in progress!

Complex but could be Lemming-like. Could be fun.

Here's a little progress. Unfortunately, I have other projects I would like to wrap up before starting on this, but I have made some graphics and a plan of the first cave. This is the cave where the player will be introduced to all the basic gameplay mechanisms.

Thanks . Yes, I hope to start soon, however as I said I have one other project I need to finish before I start...I hope it doesn't take too long as I really like this idea.

I like your concept. It is highly original(as far as I know, I've never heard of or played a game similar to this) and very well thought out. You have detail despite lack of a story. I look forward to playing this when you have it done. Good luck and happy programming.

That game has alot of potential. Dunno if this helps but when I read the idea it brought to mind a combination of metroid fusion gameplay mixed with heroes of might and magic 3. Will be keeping an eye on it

You do know Lemmings, right? I mean, it doesn't remind me of the games he named at all, but it does look like Lemmings!

*Looks on Wikipedia*

I do now!
You're right, the classes for this game sound a lot like the skills in Lemmings (The digging, exploding, etc.)

Sadly, I've never played Lemmings. I don't even really know much about it. I heard it was fun.

I would like to take this moment to remind you all that you are playing the game, and that you have all just lost. :p

Well my reasoning is that metroid fusion is an rpg while retaining good 2d platform gameplay.

Heroes 3 you build up a team of heroes by hiring those with the skills you find most useful and use them to explore the world.

I personally never liked lemmings but know lots of others did

A screenshot!

This is the level editor that I have made to use in making the many different stages in the game. Currently it only does terrain, using about 23 different tile images. However, in the future I will be able to use this to add everything about each level, from people to quests to objects such as ropes and minecars. In addition, the sloped tiles will actually have sloped bodies behind them.

I like the original idea, it looks like a fun game to play. I hope you can get part of it finished soon so we can try it out

Bump!

I was working on some other small projects for a while there, but now I hope this will have my full attention again. And summer's coming soon, so I'll have lots of spare time for programming.

I've decided to make this in 3D now, for several reasons:
1.) It will look nicer because of the depth.
2.) I'll finally get a chance to try out DarkPhysics, which I've had for several months, in an actual project.
3.) I can use shaders
4.) Box2D V2.0 is proving very confusing, especially because as of now the only help I have is the .ini file .

Los Mineros are back in progress! Current Status: Figuring out Box2D V2.0..

Sad to hear you are switching to 3D as i am also working on a box2d platformer It's confusing but worth the hassle i believe, and i am gradually getting used to it. If you would like some help i'll do my best, but i still have some problems.

Good luck with your project

Edit: You can use shaders in 2D too if you use textured plains!

Well, like I said, the confusingness of the new version of Box2D isn't the only reason I'm switching over. The depth of the levels should be a great graphical improvement. Also, things like water shaders wouldn't really work that well in a 2D environment.

Thanks for the offer, though . I would almost certainly switch back and take you up on it if not for all the other reasons I listed.
