I received my copy of Softimage XSI a few weeks ago and ive finally gotten bone animation working . Now I can finally get my models to come alive, I cant wait. Still learning a bit about the various math solvers, but ive got the general idea down.

Here's a quick torso contortion I got going, I know, nothing too impressive to the bigger modellers around here, but still cool in my mind.

Well done, animating is the hardest part of modeling IMO

Good luck

The price is nothing in comparison to max, which to me is a godsend.

Dononeton.

There is a .x exporter and it does not export UV maps correctly. I'm having to export in Lightwave object format, import that into something else (currently MilkShape) and export the .x from that.

This .x export issue is a known issue, check the XSIbase forums for more info.

vibe are you having problems importing 3ds files at all? When I chose File > Import > Import 3DS, I navigate to my 3ds file, select ok, and a dialogue box appears that allows me to configure certain settings for the import, however the dialogue box appears to be for .xsi files which is weird. Then when I select ok, the dialogue box opens again, and again and again and again until I just chose cancel causing the import to fail. I cant find any info on how to get around it. Ive been having to import lightwave models myself and then export lightwaves and import those lightwaves into wings and export those as 3ds.

Nice work, although I think you might get on better in future if you use a little more polygons on the shoulders. Shoulders can be a pain to get right, I find that more rounded shoulders move better, like an extra segment where the bone will be so it can share those verts with the torso and blend nicely.

I've been waiting on grabbing XSI, it's pretty cheap and wonderful, nice one on learning to rig in it, if you haven't already, head over to the Ed Harriss softimage website, it's a godsend for tutorials.

Around 500$, I had been saving up for the entire year. Thats for the Fondations version, I dont have a couple grand to throw away for the higher-end ones .

Or £300 according to my magazine, it's worth the money, its similar in some ways to 3DS Max. Just look at the teaser video and feature videos to see what you get, but when looking at the features, make sure it comes with the package you intend buying, the £300 one is the foundation, you'll find the extra fancy stuff won't be in foundation, like PhysX physics, GATOR or Delta referencing. But really you'll have all you need for game dev 3D modelling, like Ultimapper for baking and normal maps.

You and 99% of the rest of the forumers on here, including myself, no excuse there . Just get a part time job, 500 dollars really doesnt take that long to earn, if you get 7 dollars an hour, work 6 hours every saturday, its only 11 days until you've got 500 dollars. And 7/hour is usually lower than what part time jobs pay (usually 7.50 - 8).

There is an "Academic" version which you might be able to snag, esp with help from your school. The Academic version is the full, high-end, version but you're prohibited (on your honour, not via the package) not to make anything commerical with it.
