Hey,

First off, this doesn't really deserve a new thread, but the old one is too old for me to bump. This is a side project I started last summer, and haven't forgotten about, but just put to the side for a while, but am starting to pick back up and hopefully complete as a side project to PoPR. Not much has changed visually, I did rewrite a lot of the engine though, making it more effective and modifiable.

This will likely be open source, since I think that it will be good if people can add to it however they want and I don't really have an attachment to it like I would one of my games, because I see it as more of a tool than a game.

To quote from the old thread:
Quote: "About
I developed Virtual Office mainly for use by indie teams of game developers. Because we don't actually work in an office together day by day, it's difficult for us to get things done as fast and efficiently as we could. Virtual Office helps to solve (or will) part of that problem. It can be described as a 3D representation of a forum, IM, email, chatroom, and organizer all in one. It is like a virtual office (hence the name ), that I hope to be able to make support about 6-8 people through the internet, where they can access their "office", which other members could leave notes, videos, and drawings in. If multiple members are logged on at once, it could be used as a "meeting room" where visual representations such as notes, videos, and drawings could be used as well as speaking. So enough explanation, here's what I've done and what I have yet to do:"

And to add: Eventually there may be more advanced versions of this including a customizable office, more online support, and more features.

So, the estimated progress:
Done (for the most part):
writing
moving objects
chat
movement
sit/stand
title/rename objects

Partially Done/In Progress:
collision 50% (works with walls but not with objects and you can go through windows)
drawing 50% (need to get the dots to connect and more colors)
inventory 90%
video 70% (choose which video, possible rewind/fast forward?, right now you can play, pause, turn off, turn on, and reset)

To do:
containers (filing cabinets)
notice board
save/load
online

Website:
http://gilgalvanti.googlepages.com/virtualoffice2

One of obvious concerns I have is how to do the online support, because I've never had any experience with it, so I may need help with that. I will probably soon make the code open source (it's nothing amazing), after I finish up the inventory, possibly cabinets, and a few other little things.

Lastly, before the screenshots, the graphical aspect of the program isn't great, and really isn't even good, heh, so I'll probably be changing that, my concern about it is how to do it though. Most of the objects are individual objects to allow for individual interaction with them, so I can't lightmap it all in a separate program. Anyways, here's some screenshots, not much different than before:
A general view of the room.

The writing system with paper.

Writing on the whiteboard.

Simple chat.

Video system, and sitting in a chair.

Start of the inventory after picking up two pieces of paper.

This looks pretty cool, and I think it could be a nice tool to use when its all done. Good luck with it.

Do not ask what the forums can do ask what you can do for the forums.

This looks pretty sweet. I look forward to seeing it progress. Even if you intend to have everything able to move around, putting some lighting based on the immobile things (just the walls, lights and table) will make it look a lot cooler. If you have extended lights (like square tiles on the ceiling, or uplighters on the walls that do not illuminate any of the mobile objects directly- but light is scattered from the ceiling), there won't be any hard shadows, so it'll look alright if you plonk in the chairs and filing cabinets etc without modifying the light map.

You'll be able to click on this someday.

Alright, I got a small amount of work in this week, but it was busy again, and some today. I got inventory working, and it seems to be nearly complete . Tomorrow I'll try filing cabinets. Sorry it took so long for me to update, like I said, I've been busy this week.

I can't wait until it's done!
This tool is going to be mega helpful for developing teams!

If you're alright with this, can you please send me the .exe file of the tool? I want to try it out

This is an excellent, concept.
Although I don't think DBP is the best environment to develop it in.. also the 3D graphics aren't exactly necessary tbh.

This would work excellently as an extension, that could be linked to Windows Live; so useable in Visual Studio and Messenger.
Certainly would make online meetings far easier.

Could realistically have it like Playstation:Home the way you're designing it atleast.

Thanks for the comments . This is on hold again for now because I've picked up the development speed with Pirates of Port Royale so much.

@Game King: No problem, I'll probably be making this open source anyways. Is the email that you have posted the right one?

Very promising project! Any news? I would probably use this program with some friends when it's ready, if it's not too complicated to use, and can be used online.
Will there be just this one level? Or maybe a kind of level-editor, so you can create an office-room how you want it to be? (e.g. you could build a museum-like gallery and share photos (even if there are other, maybe better ways to do this ^^))
Is it possible, to create new objects ingame, so that you can for example have as much text-documents as you want? That would be great..
Good luck.

Not yet, the projects on hold while I work on Pirates of Port Royale .

Quote: "I would probably use this program with some friends when it's ready, if it's not too complicated to use, and can be used online. "

I plan for it to be simple but with enough features, and of course online, that's it's whole point .

I thought about making more advanced offices or even an editor eventually, but for the first release I'm just planning that level . Of course it will be open source, so anyone who wants to make a level for it easily can.

It definitely will be possible, it's just not yet .

This is a nice idea, please can I like copy your idea, possibly use some of your source code, so that I can suit it to my own company! Of course, I will put you as the "Idea Man" in the credits of it!

Heh, sure. This project is going to be open to the community, because a) It's purpose is to benefit indie developers, and b) I haven't put a lot of time into it, and much of the code is just recycled from other project.

It's not right now . I'll pick it up when I get to a stopping point with PoPR and then I plan on releasing it to the public to do whatever with .

OK, the last post is nearly two montsh ago. Sorry for digging the thread out again. But I kinda need such a program... very often. It would be possible to help other students on their homework, learning etc. online, what would be really great. Also it would speed up the game- and program-development because we could easily transfer sketches, textfiles, ideas, whatever...
Basically I wanted to "remake" the program with bozzy but I don't have much time and I'm working on so many other things, that I probably won't be able to work on this one.
So.. don't even think about stopping the project!

Sorry, other projects keep getting in the way of this one, as it's not my highest priority. As always, Pirates of Port Royale is most important, and Escape from Alendar is also somewhat important because if I can win the text adventure compo I can win Dark AI to use with PoPR . Hopefully I will be able to work on this some more soon though, and release the source/game to the public.

I will be releasing the source code for it at some point, so you could add on from there if you would like . Most everything is done but the multiplayer part .

If you ARE going to use 3D i would make it so the users switched between different positions instead of actually having to walk around the room, that would be very time consuming.
I like this idea though, would be great and useful

Not sure what you mean, it only takes like 5 seconds to cross the room .

When you get the time to work on this, you should try to add online meetings. The person your in a meeting with should be represented with a picture or a live web-cam feed. Also add microphone talk support.

Yeah, its a pretty big project, but you could sell this for some good money if it had those features

When do you think you will release the source? If you don't continue working on it I wouldn't mind picking it up or helping you with it.
