'Ello all, this is actually my first post..::the crowd quiets::.. We, as in Lumetix, are working on a 3d MMORPG, and this will be our first 3d game to date. In any event, I am attempting to rapidly understand 3d modelling and texturing and have run into some difficulty with terrains. Using the monochrone bitmap for the topography, I was able to have Milkshape generate a terrain (the world map, to be more precise). The problem comes with moving around the terrain and layering different sections. Since the terrain is so large, I am unable to really make anything out, as far as vertices go, and I am unsure how to "grab" particular sections and texture them seperately from the rest of the terrain...

p.s. I have attached the world map file (*ms3d) format so that anyone who is interested in taking a look, may do so, this is by no means a final version, but it's a start.

p.p.s. Any other texture/modelling information, tutorials, or advice involved directly with rpg/mmorpg's would be greatly appreciated...thanks.

My Boss: "Oh hey...by the way, no more drawing, reading, writing, or anything while you're working..."
Me: "So...no more free-thinking?"
My Boss: "Exactly."

Well, I assume you know how to zoom and move around the displays, correct? To texture specific parts of a model with different textures, you need to create new 'groups' by selecting a section and clicking regroup, and then applying the texture. If you need to know about basic texturing in ms3d, look at some tutorials, for example psionic has some good ms3d tutorials:

Well, normally I'd say something about making small 3d games first, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you have quite a bit of experience in 3d programming.

So your question: I would *highly* recommend that you do not use Milkshape for terrain editing. It will work, yes, however the basic "terrain" plugin is just that; a primitive plugin. Milkshape was not designed for these kind of projects.

As the poster above me said (sorry, I hate leet) Psionic has some wonderful tutorials. Personally, I would check in the Program Announcement" board of this forum and find one of the excellent terrain editors that some of our more precocious members have created =P

Best of luck!

I can proudly say that I've never coded a game of merit! Working on it though =P
