Now that I'm back in the game, I thought it would be neat if I shared my design process when creating media. What better way to show that then with my current joint project, Mystic Dream.

One of the first things after establishing a world, or in this case what Hayen has laid out for me , I sketch. I sketch till my fingers hurt and I'm high from all the ink fumes.

In the upcoming demo, you'll be able to choose between two races/genders: Female Rangers, and the Male Shadows. Good and evil respectively. The ranger's were pretty easy to design, tall humanoid with pointed ears, your typical Tolken elve.

For the shadow, I had a hard time trying to make them look scary, but I eventually came up with a design that best suited this race. They look humanoid, but they have no ears, eyes or nose, and they have razor sharp teeth. Three fingers and toes. But what really makes them scary is their ability to devour souls without a body. It's like an addiction if they don't get their fix at least 5 times a day, they go on a rampage, killing anything they happen to see, well, sense

As for monsters, the upcoming demo will feature two monsters which you'll be seeing in the final game. The first is a Shadow Walker that has been infused with meteorite crystals, sorta re-animated dead. Though the story behind the crystals you'll have to discover from the game.

The next monster is a special boss I've designed just for the demo, waiting in her inner most chamber of her Vial Fortress, to slay the heroes that come for her blood. So I went with the duel weilding demon snake, thought it sounded good for a boss character

Once i get permission, i'll post some nice render's for you guys, so you can see how my models come together after the design phase

I'm sure these are just concepts for 3D model's he's working on that he'll be posting soon - I think it's a design check, as the concept art is an important thing to have right before doing the actual modelling.

Those characters look pretty cool, can't wait for the 3D renders - kind of makes me wanna model some characters, but I will be able to at the end of the month

it's the whole 9 yards...I'm showing my design process from concept to final model/animation...I'm just using my Mystic Dream media to showoff, and to get some hype going for the game.

Yup, I'm from England. I'm not exactly the right person to ask, but there are various universities and 6thform/Regional colleges for post-16 education that do 3D. I was told there was one at Bedford, but that didn't check out.

If you're not looking for a qualification, but just want 3D training, 'Escape Studios' is a good place (I think they're located in Soho, London - they're also a reseller for a lot of 3D software) look for their website. You can also do video training through Kurv studios...but again no qualifications.

Here is one course at the Anglia Ruskin I came across whilst page flicking through their prospectus:

http://www.anglia.ac.uk/ruskin/en/home/prospectus/undergrad2007/comp_vis.html

All you need 3 C's in GCSE in relevant subjects - of course this would require a proper university style application, I don't know whether or not you're ready for that. (I know I wouldn't have been after my GCSEs) It also say 180 tariff points...that should apply to A Levels, so my best guess is that you need those gcses and 180 points worth of A Level (180 isn't a big number, an 'a' in a single A-Level is worth 120 point, a 'b' is 100 if I remember right, so that could be BC or if you did 3 A Levels, even lower grades.)

Please note, that course isn't 3D modelling specific, you've got web design, sound, 2D animation as well as 3D animation (2D and 3D will come up for the 2nd and 3rd years)

If you want one straight from GCSE...well I wouldn't know of any that could give you a qualification.

wow thanks for the info sep I'm just starting my GCSE's actually, but I like to know my options early

Quote: "All you need 3 C's in GCSE in relevant subjects"

Thats ok, i'm predicted to get 5-8 A's and about 5 others (i'm doing 12 in all)

And i don't mind about it being a qualification or not, I just couldn't find anywhere myself where I could get some training.

thanks again for the info sep

But please note it also asks for 180 tariff points (As I added later on in the post in realisation) - tariff points are a system that applies to GCE A Levels or equivalent. So it could be C's in relevant subjects (So I guess ICT and maybe art) and 180 points in A Levels (That can be a B and a C or C,C,E, 3 D's could do it) So I'd drop the university an email and try to find out as much as you can before you complete your GCSEs, so you can apply to any relevant college courses if necessary.

And no problem, my pleasure.

But you may want to note that university did just lay off 80 Professors, although they've a little problem with money, but have a good reputation (As one campus is in Cambridge, although that course is on the Chelsford campus, you can imagine they get a good rep.) which is why they're my number 2 choice university.

Good luck with your GCSE's and in finding the place you want for 3D (If all you care about is training in 3D, then perhaps Escape Studios is the option, but look into all sources into detail and pick which one you like the most) As for your predicted grades, nice one, 'tis probably a good idea to use them when you leave.

[-offtopic]

Uh, this is probably a thread Hijack - if you have anything to say or ask, it's probably best to drop me an email, here it is if you can't see it below - seppuku05@gmail.com

I think you've misread, or I've mispresented, I don't study 3D modelling at all, hence I haven't been doing any for a while, I'm doing A Level subjects in 6th form...and er...Take it away Moondog, lets see how these models look so far

not to be mean, of course

i'll start posting models within the week, first i have to finish the terrain meshes so i can send them hayden's way, got to get that demo completed

So how is Mystic Dream coming along?

Quote: "first i have to finish the terrain meshes so i can send them hayden's way, got to get that demo completed"

Do you have a way to cull the terrain? If you don't then it might not be to the project's benefit to use mesh terrains. They can look good but are hardly worth the drain in a big RPG game.

Come see the WIP!

ah, u mis-understand then the demo terrain isn't on the ground...and the levels are built in an editor, and it's grid based, so the levels will only render whats close to the player.

also, most of the tiles in the level are instanced, and there pretty low poly, soon to be accented by normal maps(though wont be included in demo due to time restraints)

eventually a LOD system will be implemented, because i'll be putting in a little more detail into levels, like grass, and other fine details to bring the levels to life.

dont worry, i've modeled the terrain meshes for speed, i don't see any problems arising.

My names Josh, and admiral's name is Hayden. admiral is the programer, i'm the modeler respectively. we've been friends a long time, and since we talk to each other on a first name basis, i just say it by habit, instead of saying admiral, or his other screen names he's had on these forums in the past.
