You must to be good in two languages:

1. Any programming language of your preference;
2. English..

heheh just kidding But I recomend installing the google toolbar, which has a spell checker. Many people here are not native english speakers, and most of them will be able to help you if your mass of text looks comprehensible

About the language. TGC has some cool programs that will help you to make your simulator. The 3D GameMaker looks shiny, but forget it, because it is too limited. Buy Dark Basic Pro - or Dark Basic "Classic" if money is a decisive factor. I had some experience with DBP in the past and I totally recomend it. You will have to learn programming, but there is a large community willing to help. And you will end up finding it easy.

You will have to learn 3D modelling, animation and texturing too, unless you know someone who can help you.

Good luck. And post a WIP only when you have something concrete to show

Mathematics and physics, computer algorithms. You're probably best off using something like Newton (with DBP) rather than coding everything from scratch. You'll want to read up on car physics and mechanics, and how to go about coding a car sim. Use google for this.

If you use Newton, play around with simple stuff and make sure you know how it works before you dive in the deep end and do cars. If i remember right there are examples- figure out what makes them go. THere's probably a vehicle example included.

I wouldn't worry about graphics or anything yet. Just use boxes and cylinders and stuff. If you can get a realistic and playable car sim running then talented folk will probably be more than willing to chuck models, textures, music and all that superfluous stuff your way. Good luck!
