It's like asking every company to share its trade secrets with the world just to better humanity....it sounds good but it's never going to happen."

That doesn't mean we can't try. A lot of software engineers who work for companies are very active in the open source community. The way I see it we are very close to this ideal world.

In that case you can get MSYS and MinGW. That will allow you to run the "configure" script followed by "make".

Have you got some examples of that happening?

I don't want to open the VS project files with VS. That's not how an automated build works. An automated build is when you call a single script from the terminal and your entire project (including all dependant projects) are built and installed automatically.

I just told you it can install to a nonstandard location such as your home folder.

Good news, the sick cat that we eventually found came back from the vet's today and he's as right as rain. They think he might have had some sort of infection, although they couldn't find it. He's been given an anti-inflammatory injection and a course of antibiotics. Thanks for those that showed sympathy. And curses to those that didn't of course.

On a completely different note, why do people take it upon themselves to be (wrongfully) offended on behalf of someone else? https://plus.google.com/u/1/111188614365100925770/posts/C3sMCijTSiT

I suppose.

Doing that is a PITA.

I can't remember any specific examples, but if I do I'll show you.

That's true, but I just went back through the posts and I can't find any place where I said VS project files where an automatic build solution. It seems like you just said that out of the blue. Maybe I missed something...

Quote: "I just told you it can install to a nonstandard location such as your home folder."

Oops crap I mistyped that. I was tired, so I don't remember exactly what I was getting at, but I think I meant to say it can't install anything to the registry. Also, there's no such thing as a Home folder on Windows, so I assume you mean your User folder.

The official Posting Competition rules dictate that a new page starts every 50 posts.

EDIT Actually it's apparently not in the official rules, but 50 posts has been the pretty universally agreed upon number for a loooong time.

So check this out, the 25th post in this entire thread:

Quote: "Oh geesh, another thread of random posting? Why not just stop now, before we have a whole bunch of noob slaps on our hands.... I just can't see this thread turning out well, especially after the last couple of random threads got locked. "

Umm....you do appear to be correct. 40 IS the default and it's what I'm using. I thought it was 50, but apparently I was wrong. Well I won't be changing it, so I'll just have to use the post count to work out the page number

I already claimed the page and you don't get points for the 11th post on a page.

Quote: "I just went back through the posts and I can't find any place where I said VS project files where an automatic build solution. It seems like you just said that out of the blue"

I misquoted. I was talking about automating the build process on Windows and you answered that with something about opening project files in VS. I meant to quote that.

My best friends of the last almost 4 years are moving down south to New Orleans - we live in Wisconsin, so it'll be a pretty major shift in climate for them.

But damn, I'm gonna miss them. We didn't know for sure if they would even be able to move there until literally only a week and a half ago. They're leaving tomorrow morning and we're having a big party tonight to celebrate for them.

Thank God for this day and age, where distance doesn't mean the end of a friendship, thanks to Skype, facebook, and all that other social media shtuff!

So I have a story joke for y'all:

So once upon a time, there was this guy who asked a girl to prom. She said yes, and so it was time to begin getting ready for the prom. First of all, the guy had to get himself a fancy suit. So the guy gets to the suit place, and there is just this massive line. He goes to the end of the line, and begins waiting. He waits and waits in line. After about half an hour of making small talk with other strangers in line, the guy finally makes it to the front of the line. He gets fitted for the suit, and he is looking good. He rents the suit, and he is on his way. The next thing the guy needs to do is book a limousine. He goes to the limousine place, and there is another very long line there. The guy goes to the end of the line, and he begins waiting. While the guy is in the line, he looks at various websites on his smartphone. "How to cut in line without others noticing" for example. Finally, three hours of miserable line waiting pass, and the guy makes it to the front of the line. He books a limo, and he is on his way. Next, the guy needs to get some flowers and a box of chocolates for his girl. He goes to the flower place, and there is a big line there. He waits in line for many hours. All the while, he looks on his smartphone, and he studies the various types of chocolates and flowers. After about two hours of researching in line, the guy finally knows what type of chocolates and flowers will be best for the girl. One more hour, and the guy makes it to the front of the line. He buys the flowers and the box of chocolates, and he is on his way. A few days pass, and it's time for prom. The guy puts on his suit, and the limousine picks him up. The limousine then picks up the girl, and the guy hands her the flowers and the box of chocolates. The girl is wearing a beautiful dress, and the guy compliments her on it. The girl begins talking about the huge line that she had to wait in to get her dress. She waited for hours and hours in that line. After a little while, the limousine drops the two off at the prom. There is a long line at the ticket booth, and the two go and begin waiting in that line. The girl becomes hungry, and she eats the entire box of chocolates while waiting in that line. Finally, the two make it to the front of the line, and they get their tickets. Now, the two must wait in line to be let through the doors to get into prom, and so they begin waiting in that line. After they wait for about three hours, the girl becomes very hungry again, and she eats her entire bouche of flowers. Finally, after waiting in line for five hours, the two make it to the front of the line, and they are finally at prom.

After dancing for a little while, the guy and the girl decide that they would like to have some punch together. They go up to the punch stand, and

So apparently I am speaking in French today! 'Bouche' is a French word that translates to 'mouth'.

She ate her own mouth. That's how hungry she was.

Wow, the speed diffirence between python and C++ are a lot bigger than I had thought. For the past 2 weeks or so, I have been trying to get object tracking based on colour working on my raspberry PI. I started out using python since I was using that for the robot im building anyway and after a few days I managed to capture some images and started to process them. I started out capturing a 100x75 image and looking at every 10 pixels, which was way to low if you wanted to find any objects further away than 20 cm so I changed it to looking at every 5 pixels. It still didn't work fine and when I checked how long it took to process one frame, it turned out that it took 0.7 seconds.

All im doing is looping through every 5 pixels (100/5 * 75/5) and checking if R, G and B is within a threshold.

Im now doing it in C++ using open CV instead where I can convert the image from BGR (because aparently it's better to capture in BGR than RGB) to HSV, then loop through every pixel to check for the threshold stuff and save that data to a new image and all in about 0.05 seconds. And that's for a 320x240 image. I knew script languages were slower than compiled but I didn't know it was this "bad".

Unless im doing something weird when calculating the diffirence, C++ is 16000 times faster at doing this task than python

I'm not surprised (ok, slightly); Python is one of the slowest interpreted languages. I say you should always use C++ for any kind of processing work.

C++ compilers, especially in release mode, do some crazy optimizations under the hood. And OpenCV is a really really optimized image processing library so that makes sense as well.

Also, it doesn't hurt that the only language slower than Python that's interpreted is Lua without LuaJIT(IIRC), or Matlab.

In python, when writing speed critical code (if you have to do that in the first place), there are some tricks to speed it up.

The fastest way to do what you describe in python would be:

The following is noticeably slower:

If you don't need access to the actual pixel but are performing a check on the entire list of pixels, use any.

Well what do you do when you wanna cook something that needs bread crumbs like right now and you live in the mountains and the closest grocery store is like 45 minutes away? Also, why would I pay someone else to crumble bread for me?

Ok, so I just assumed you'd be in the city; we're in exactly the same predicament as you. We also live 45 minutes from the nearest grocery store and we're in the mountains.

So you don't have to cut yourself doing it... duh I can't remember whether Mum crumbs the bread herself or buys packets.

Master bathrooms that span two levels are odd. :/

Spiral staircases, however, are amazing!!!!!! From an architectural standpoint, their footprint is soooo small compared to regular stairs.

I know. In a way, though, I was also trolling. Seditious has strong beliefs, and so do I. I was trying to get him to defend his.

Well, as everybody knows, the only thing more fun than trolling is trolling the trolls Especially as they always think you're serious, so they're secretly laughing in the background, but they don't realise that you're laughing at them too because you know they think you're serious when you're not
