Kubuntu 14.04. I was a long time Ubuntu user until they brought out Gnome 3, so I jumped ship to a KDE interface and kept the underlying system to be Ubuntu based.

This thread just started on GDNet: http://www.gamedev.net/topic/659072-weird-syntax-tricks

In C++, overloading a function via return type is possible by doing this hack:

I also learned about duff's device:

Did they use gnome before creating unity?

I personally like gnome a lot more than KDE. KDE feels so "bloated". There are a ton of animations for everything and I had some issues with it not saving settings which made it even worse. It also broke my Gnome and cinamon when I installed which wasn't perfect

Gnome 2.x was what I used before unity, yes. Unity is just another name for Gnome 3.

KDE is very different and takes some time getting used to. I recommend getting the entire bundle of software if you're going to try out KDE and not just the window manager.

The reason I use it is it looks clean and has some awesome features. In particular, the file manager "Dolphin" can preview all kinds of media so you don't have to open the files to know what's in them, and I frequently use its "split view" feature when moving files around.

The default package manager shipped with KDE is very powerful and makes it easy to find the software you need.

KDE supports widgets (don't know if you've seen a screenshot of my desktop or not but I have a widget that shows hardware monitors and another widget where I can write notes).

And the last thing I find very useful is it supports multiple desktop sessions. This is a level up from virtual desktops, it allows you to switch between entire sessions.

My dad is in the hospital and they don't allow any network devices in some areas so I had to turn off wifi on his computer when we brought that to him. Turns out there is no way to turn on any form of airplane mode or anything like that in windows 7. I had to go into the device manager and manually disable the wireless device. In gnome 3 on my laptop it's 2 clicks to turn it off and on my desktop the fastest I can find is 4 which compared to windows is nothing.

Also, he was moved to another area of the hospital and called to help him turn it back on. It took 7 minutes to explain how to do it, even though compared to a lot of people, he's pretty good with computers. On linux I could probably just have told him to open a terminal and run one or 2 commands to get it back up (or I could have told him to click the 2/4 clicks I did ). I didn't think linux would be more user friendly than windows when I started using it but it seems like where windows obstruct everything in weird menus, linux has those features pretty visible. And helping someone by telling them a few commands is a lot easier than "press start, look for control panel, click on that, click on device manager and click on networking devices", "i don't see netwroking devices", "oh, ok what do you see?", "Umm, im not sure", "ok, is there a list of things with plus signs next to them", "yes"... and so on.

Also, I love how the color of the screen changes in the gif, just like a CRT screen would. (I think, im to young to remember much of CRT screens)

No you don't. Just go to Network and Sharing Center and disable the adapter from there.

5 clicks for Windows 7. Wait, no, 4.

That's what I hate about Linux, is that everyone is expected to use terminal commands instead of a GUI. Sure, cmdline stuff has its place and I frequently use it in Windows, but it shouldn't be a necessity. Additionally, you can use a single command at a cmd to enable and disable an adapter.

Quote: "it seems like where windows obstruct everything in weird menus"

Certainly not everything (for example, Device Manager is not a "weird menu", it's an extremely useful tool for controlling every physical and virtual device in the computer), but I have to agree that Windows does have an annoying habit of spreading stuff out into the most unintelligent places and hiding it.

Most laptops will do that with one keypress (or two), Fn+F2 on mine.

Expected, nah. Extremely useful, yes. Most everything can be done in a GUI at this point.

I actually really like KDE compared to Gnome. It's simpler and is quite a bit more customizable. Though it does suck when you start with Gnome and then switch to KDE. Such a pain. Starting with KDE is better. Full Disclosure: I use XFCE because the customizable context menu is to die for.

Most of the sites and forums are populated by people that work almost exclusively in the terminal. Plus, it's an environment that's shared between all Linux distributions. Sure you can navigate to the /var/log/ directory using a file manager such as Nautilus and then open the file "messages" using a graphical editor like gedit or KWrite and then filter stuff out using Ctrl-F but that's a lot more work(from the viewpoint of a terminal user) than a relatively simple composition of commands:

When I first started using Linux, I had a really hard time getting accustomed to the terminal. It seemed complicated and hard to use, so I mainly stuck to the GUI.

The world I was missing out on... I wish I could give you the experience and insight I have. The terminal is so much faster and more convenient than any graphical method of doing things. As Dar13 said, nearly everything you can do on the terminal can be done through a GUI if that makes you more comfortable, but the terminal is really not hard to use. What makes it easy is its consistency. There are standards in place and once you learn how to use the coreutils, it's super easy to learn everything else. Plus you can install powerful extensions supporting auto-correction and auto-completion, making the terminal far more feasible.

You can't compare the Windows command line to a Linux terminal. I've said this before in another thread, the Linux terminal is what drives the entire system. It's a view inside the very core of the OS. Everything, including the whole window manager and graphical frontend, is controlled through the terminal and can be manipulated with a few commands. The Windows command line is merely a toy in comparison, and as far as I can see, isn't even part of the operating system as a whole. It's just an application that runs inside Windows.

Quote: "Really? Why? What's your bad experience with Windows?"

Mainly the whole idea of not being free (as in freedom, not price). It is known that Microsoft collects information about your activities without your knowledge. It is known that Windows is able to execute arbitrary programs behind your back. The software you install on Windows is largely closed-source, and has the same potential to do things behind your back.

Compiling software on Windows is an absolute nightmare, and I know a lot of people who are scared of ever having to compile a program from source on Linux just because their Windows experience with compiling software was horrible.

Catching viruses or malware on Windows is way too easy. It is not a secure operating system in the slightest. Again, because there is no central package management.

"But TheComet, if you have a good antivirus program installed then you won't get viruses!" -- The fact that you have to install antivirus software already shows that you're trying to fix something that is obviously broken to begin with. I'm not saying Linux can't catch viruses, but it definitely has a far more secure system in place for preventing viruses and thus has no need for antivirus software.

The only thing Windows is good at right now is gaming and being a little more user friendly than Linux and costing a lot of money. With that said, Gnome is definitely closing that usability distance, and Valve's work towards gaming on Linux is slowly tipping that scale.

Actually, Windows computers are pretty safe these days if you're careful and smart. As long as you install Windows updates ASAP..........
There are very few viruses that can spread without the user doing anything, so as long as the user's careful and keeps his/her software updated, there aren't really any worries

I've heard of it but never used it myself.

From what I gather, it has its advantages and disadvantages when compared to a terminal, however I don't believe it can get to the level of a terminal with extensions (such as oh-my-zsh).

I'm not sure what Hyper-V has to do with anything, he wasn't talking about Virtual Machines at all.

As for PowerShell versus the various Linux shells(bash, zsh, dash, fish, etc), I find it hard to think of them being equivalent. PowerShell is relatively new(I believe it first came out in 2009 based on the copyright notice) and doesn't fully replace the command prompt. The command prompt is absolutely destroyed by the Linux shells/terminals. PowerShell is better but doesn't have half the support and tools that the Linux tools do.

When someone gets vim to work in PowerShell, I just might give it a shot. But until then, I'll stick with Cygwin or a Linux distro.

I totally agree with what you said about the linux terminal, everything is so much faster in the terminal than the GUI. There are also some realy powerfull file editing/searching/comparing features in there. A minecraft server that I was given "charge of" was crashing randomly and I had to compare the log files when the server was working to the logs where it crashed. I wrote a python script to strip all timestamps from every line, and then I found 4 programs that were able to compare the 2 files. Things like that really show you how much the terminal can do, even though you could probably download a program from a shady site where you have to play russian roulette with download links, install that program, download python and run the strip timestamp script, open the program you downloaded and locate both the logfiles to compare them.

Edit: Aww, looks like I missed points because I posted such a long message

VIM is Vi IMproved, an in-terminal file editor that uses unique key combinations instead of mouse clicks to edit, search, and move around the file. Vim and Emacs are the two more popular text editors on Linux.

Yup! I don't let it start up with Windows though so it seems like I'm never online.
