EDIT:

finished main body:

here's the texture sheet:

///////////////////////////

original:

Modeled this and now finishing the texture/normal map over this weekend, its just been a simple machine type model that i want to give away free for use in X10 as a sort of 'companion'

I'll give more details on how to get it when im finished, I'll be asking for an extremely simple task in return , for now here are some progress shots

it will fly at about head height (not visible in the shots but there are thrusters at the back, and will also have weird mechanical tentacles. (crysis inspired, that game is ridiculously amazing...)

Anyway, disgustingly good model you have there Jon. I wish I had your talents!

Speaking of talents...please release some texturing and/or modelling tutorials if you ever find the time. I envy you.

First thing I thought was the Oracle from Halo. I usually don't post on this board, but this is disgustingly good indeed!

Aah, I liked it better without the tentacles, honestly. The entire thing seemed more impressive when there wasn't all that empty space below it (between the tentacles).

But I'm interested in seeing the final product.

once again, AMAZING work! i wish i could make textures as good as you too

EDIT:
ok, i have to ask: how DO you make your textures!? there is no way that you do it all from scratch in photoshop or something (if you do, then omg, your the god of texturing). do you mix tons of photos that you edit or something? im just too curious because i can't get my textures to look even 1/10th as good as yours.

EDIT2: i just looked at your portfolio and all of your tutorials and the Florpk videos. i am truely amazed! surely you have a graphics tablet, because i know i couldn't do what you do with a mouse!

lol thanks.

its all down to a base layer, then i usually have just 3 types of layers from there on, being dodge and burn layers, then layers to overlay patterns.

no i dont use a tablet, too innacurate for my tastes (could just be my pathetic skills with them)

i do have one though, ive got it out every now and then to try and get used to it and 'make the switch' but it just wont work for me.

lol thanks

finishing most of the top and back today, but not much 'visible' progress:

might get the main model texture finished by today and able to sort out the low poly tentacles soon, rather than using basic tubes to present them. they'll have a sort of claw/clamp at the end of them.

finished the main thing, shots of the underneath as well:

as you have probably assumed, i got bored im gonna make a advertisement board sign to go with it

texture sheet:

^^ extra UV space (primarily where the text is) is being saved for the tentacles

I'll also be creating another variation, with (instead of tentacles) mechanical 'spider legs'

Haha, for $9400 I'm not buying something without a remote that could blow my head off. I'd almost consider buying the model for that price, if there'd be batteries and a remote included.

tehe

anyway, got it in X10:

dead:

one problem that will be easily resolved, visible in the screenshot is the firespot, just needs to be rotated the right way.

What isn't visible is that im having some annoying animation problems (as i don't intend on using a full set like the main character biped) and things just aren't even playing, despite everywhere I've looked knowing theoretically that they should

might scrap the tentacles anyway, they are just a pain to animate and they can look cheap in a lot of cases. (also didn't create the claws/clamps so thats another reason)

Excellent model, but I'm not totally sure I like the tentacles. I think you could probably add another joint to them, also, I think they should have something done with the ends, whether they get pointy or have a slightly bulbous / paddled end, maybe with lights or sensors of some sort... They just seem to cut off abruptly which I don't think does the model justice.

Just an opinion, you are the artist ^_^

@ Dink

ya i know, i didn't like the tentacles whilst i was making them and i was having second thoughts, which made me not even want to make the end of them

think i might have written something like that in my last post but im probably going to scrap them, overall not really worth it.

Well, no tentacles, ok, but he may benefit from some little metallic arms with drils or blades on them for some melee attacks heheh.

i really dont have a clue as to how i'd acheive that but it seems like i would need to trigger an animation to show a broken eye before the death sequence, i think i need to edit the script anyway to use the animation set i made so its worth a try

In X9 all you would do is flicker an alternate texture, and tell it to animate the broken eye in.

Yeah, and X10 supports alternate textures and animated ones (with scripting, I'm guessing) too, right?

Hi jon,

Just an observation.. in the 'dead' render why is his eye still glowing? I would think the light would have gone out. I wonder if a second texture with the glowing parts darkened (or grayscaled and darkened) would work? hmm.. could an effect be made where the 'powered-up' texture transitions into the 'dead-powerless' one? perhaps with some kind of flickering?..

Anyways, just throwing my thoughts out here. It is an awesome model.

An Artist's best work always comes when he/she is having fun. You obviously love what you do.

Cheers!

This is a great model, looks like those things from the matrix.
I think it would be a good idea to do more of these quicker bots, for a moddeler they are quicker to make than organic models. Perhaps we could see more bots from you.

I wish you would make some tutorials about how you can get these results...

I'm just curious, how much time do you take to model and texture the model? Just wondering...

Anyways, I just wanted to tell you you're amazing! (Unlike me)
