This is from July 2006 News Letter

Quote: "Tree and Grass Game Engines
Also on sale are BlitzGrass3D and BlitzTree3D. These are complete 3D grass and tree engines that you can drop right into your Blitz Basic games, ready for use. Yes you read that correctly - these two titles only work with Blitz Basic 3D! (I bet that is something you never thought you'd read in a TGC newsletter, ever!) We are working on our own versions for DarkBASIC Professional under the working title of Dark Earth.

Why post this in WIP? Post it in Geek Culture.

I give up...

When I posted my question in Geek Culture back in 2006.
Someone said
Quote: "This isnt the place to post, but DarkEarth sounds like an awesome MMo
"

So, since I hope its still a WIP and has not been abandoned, I figured this would be the next best place to post in 2008.

I'm disappointed to see that all I got was "post this somewhere else..."

Anyone out there who knows the progress of Dark Earth, please share

Geek Culture is in fact the right place to post this. WIP is for WIPs.

But, TGC has just been busy with other things, so no work has been done on this. I guess they'll do it if they feel like there's enough of a demand for it once they finish up with a few things they're working on, perhaps they haven't gotten that feeling from us.

Come see the WIP!

Well whoever made that comment in 2006 is foolish, perhaps they didn't know what you were on about. But geek culture is the right place to post.

Anyway, I've not heard anything about it, to be honest this is the first - hopefully TGC do keep up their promise of a 2008 release, that sounds like something I could really do with. But TGC have been working hard on other releases. For 2008 I know they've got Dark GDK.NET for VS 2008 and no doubt they're working on a DirectX 10 version of Dark Basic.

2008 is a bit of a stretch I'd say and due to the lack of mention around it I reckon it might be a "We'll do it when we want sort of thing and get the bigger things out of the way" thing. I'd settle for the next best thing for now and pick up Vegetator Professional by one of our members uncle Sam, I've got it and it's a useful app - but you don't design your plants, you just paint them onto a model or terrain. The trees and plants are preset and who can argue with the results?

thanks guys for all the feedback.

I just put 2008 there hoping to let TGC know that I would like to add this to my game making tools if they just make it available. and to also see if anyone else was interested in it.

Just like you said Cash

Well I hope this starts something good

I was so excited when they mentioned Dark Earth back in 2006, then I heard nothing. I know that TGC is always hard at work, so with the new FPSC x10 and new dark basic, I wondered if they have touched any of the vegetation/terrain aspects that might lead into Dark Earth eventually.

@Seppuku, I already use vegetation maps, but I'll have to check Vegetator Professional as well, uncle Sam makes good stuff.

@Zotoaster, look up news letter for July 2006. its a Tree/Grass system for dark basic.

My vegetation maps work fine to place items, trees etc.. on terrain, but they lack optimization/memory management. I think I can get faster performance, but I'm still working on it.
