"Building Portals"? No idea, I suppose the difference between layers. And why it takes long, depends on your PC and how large your level is.

A portal is what gets created when you place a door or anything that "cuts" through walls and the like. They can take a fair amount of time to build due to their usual complex shapes.

Plysire, Even if I place no doors or whatever in my level, but just plain segments and some entities(No CSG stuff) it sometimes also does that. So it is doing something else too I suppose.

I think portals are the different sections it prepares to render. Large sections (where there are lots of doors, or MASSIVE rooms) take a long time to load. That's always been my assumption anyway.
