If you good enough, then yes. A sequence of buttons that have to be pressed would be easy but having a new controller for a game like guitar hero would be hard.

Certainly, if you have the skill. I might suggest though that you would want to use DarkGDK as a graphical and input library and something like FMOD for your sound engine. At least, for sound orientated games like what you mentioned where really powerful, feature rich, sound engines are nearly essential.

I think it's possible to build a DDR even with C#, WindowsForms and GDI+ (excluding the background 3D objects).

Really, these kind of games are generally so simple (graphically speaking) that I see no problem at all. A Guitar Hero like controller for PCs would be difficult for people to have in their houses, but I myself have a "dancing mat" from DDR MarioMix + a GC-PC USB converter and I used to play StepMania (no time for now).

About the sound engine, I can't say for sure if DGDK's one is enough or if it would be really necessary to use another one.

Yes, you can, but don't say that your brain is squished after you've tried.
In other words, it's very hard, but possible.
Good luck,
Adrian

The XBox360 DDR pad/GH controllers and RB controllers are all standard controllers as exposed by the XInput library included with the DirectX SDK. It is quite easy to use XInput, there are only 6 function calls in the entire API.
