Travis, if you're serious about getting into modeling, then I would strongly recommend that you download Blender and learn from there. Blender is FREE, and it's capabilities are on par with 3D Studio Max (which costs $3,000+). Google sketchup might have a more user-friendly interface, but keep in mind the most skilled 3D modelers in the world are limited by the capabilities of the software they're using. Taking a week or two to become familiar with Blender will be well worth the quality difference you'll see in your models.
Every custom model I make for FPS Creator is done with Blender, and textured using GIMP. You can take at look at my posts to see more screenshots of some of the models I created using Blender and GIMP. The model below took me
less than an hour to model and texture (thanks to Blender's hotkeys, and GIMP'S easy-to-use layout):
