Ok, well was supposed to be a two day game but it looks like it will take a little longer so I'm going to post it here.

Start Date : May 27 2009
End Date : --- -- ----

Videos:
Video 1 - Day 1 and 2
Video 2 - Day 3 and 4
Video 3 - Days 5 to 9

Screenshot:

Gameplay:
The design has changed a little since I first posted this WIP.

The game is an Adventure Puzzle game heavily based upon Spyro the Dragon. The main idea of the game is to collect all of the bananas you can find, but there will be many puzzles along the way to stop you in your tracks. At the moment the plan is to have six different levels all with different themes and all having a minimum of 100 bananas each.

Things I need before I release a demo:
Legend:
= Done
= Working On
= Not Started

Level 1
Sounds
Bug Fixes
Enemy Models
Basic AI
Monkey Character with Animations
New Sky
Menus

I'd say that is pretty cool!

I like the animation when he jumps. The jiggling arms are funny.

How do you do the cartoon shading? I have always been wondering...

Looks like you've got the basics down. Is it fun though? Good luck.

Thanks, the cartoon shading is very simple. Just duplicate an object, scale it up by a little, invert the faces, and then color the faces black.

Thanks! I'm not sure about adding enemys; I would like too, but I would also like to not, lol! It depends on how well the game plays without them.

Fun? Not at the moment, but that will all come with the level design. Thanks!

I should be uploading another video tonight, hopefully longer and more cool(Bad grammer on purpose).

Looks very nice. Charming, even. I'd look at upping the walk speed a fair bit though, as I imagine slowly wandering around after those items will start to frustrate before long. Especially if the player dies and starts over, it will become a monotonous chore.

So yeah quicken.

Other than that, like I said, very nice. If you haven't thought about it yet, how about making those "spring pillars" rock back-and-forth? Also, I would recommend looking into getting enemies in there, as it'll really liven the world up and give it real character, otherwise it's going to get a bit lonely and isolated.

Good luck.

Thanks! I agree with you about the walk speed and I plan on adding a run button(shift key) to make moving around the map easier; In fact, it's already added it just doesn't have an animation so I didn't use it in the video. The springs will be animated, probably in the next day or two. It looks like I am going to need to add enemies because everyone I show it too asks where they are.

A lot of people say the main character should be a monkey. What do you guys thing? I'm going to change it unless a large amount of people don't like the idea. I don't even know what the character is right now, lol!

Well at the moment it sort of looks like a grape with melon-slice feet. If you're sticking with just banana items than maybe you could think about getting a monkey in there if you want. If you decide not to in the end, I imagine varying the fruit will deter people from making such suggestions.

I'll start with the positive aspects:

-It looks very clean and has a lot of potential.
-The levels look really good. What do you use to make them? And how do you detect collision?
-Clouds have vastly improved, I love the style.
-Good luck with this project!

negative/improvements:

-The cartoon shading is too big on the levels, or too small on the character
-speed up the character's speed
-You need the level to be on something like water, or lava, or something like that. Right now it is blue.

All in all, really good!

@MonoCoder
Hmmm... Adding different fruits would make the counter and such more complicated, but I'll keep that idea in mind in case I decide I don't like the monkey.

@TheComet
All of the 3d models were made in Wings3D and the textures were made in Gimp. I will make the cartoon shading smaller and see how it looks. About the level, there will be fog under it; Very similar to one of the levels in Spyro the Dragon.

On another note, does anyone know of any good software for editing videos. All I want is somthing so that I can add text to my videos.

That looks absolutely great! I love the editor.

I was wondering, would you perhaps want some help with the models? I can never seem to get in on a good cartoony platformer project... If so, you can see some of my newer work in my latest posts.

Aim would be best. The email in my profile is fake and I'm too lazy to change it. But the aim is correct 'coreydrake'

I took two days off from this game because I was having an annoying problem. I'm still having this problem so if anyone has used fragmotion sucessfully with DBPro or FPSC please take a look at this thread.

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=152036&b=3

I'm going to work on finishing the first level, remaking the skydome(there is some stretching) and adding the first puzzle then I'll put up a new video.

Yours looks awesome so far

Also doesnt windows movie maker allow you to add text to video?

Nothing to see here, move along please.

Thanks for the comments guys they are what keeps me motivated to work on this.

@Lucifer
Thanks! I do plan on releasing a demo soon. I updated the list in my first post to show what I am currently working on. I don't have a set date yet because I don't want to make any promises I can't keep.

@Softwizz
Thanks! I'll be looking for a WIP from you. I think Windows Movie Maker does have text but it's very limited from what remember.

Windows movie maker is good enough if you just want to add text and
upload to youtube. I use it for all my gameplay videos.
The editor looks great by the way!

If you want to just forgo the whole text thing when you're putting the vid together, you tube has that new too that lets you add text to the vid once it's uploaded now.

Thanks zzz! I'm using the text thing that YouTube has and I really don't like it that's why I was asking for a program. It looks like WMM will be what I use.

PS: I think it's sweet that both zzz and Bizar Guy have posted in this thread. They are the BOTB(Best Of The Best) of DarkBASIC/Pro developers IMO, along with a few others.

Looks very nice, I'm a large fan of that sort of hand-crayon drawn art style you're going for, but maybe making that background a bit more of that style? It doesn't seem to fit in all too much as of now.
That's obviously just graphical and I know it comes last but hey, I know crap about the non-graphical stuff!

I didn't even think about the background not being correct, thanks for the reminder.
