We just had a thread discussion about this.

Someone suggested this as free hosting:
http://heliohost.org/home

I use http://hosting.fastdomain.com/ and rather like them. I have huge storage and bandwidth limits, we're talking terabytes.

Geocities was never a good host, neither was angelfire or those other free yet insanely ad-infested hosts.

Well, I use http://www.one.com and am happy; decent prices, good enough storage (up to 25GB) and "unlimited bandwidth". (You may get shut down if you manage to actually mess up their servers with your huge loads, but that isn't really an issue for me at least, so to speak ).

DO NOT use GoDaddy hosting/domains, whatever you do. They ripped me off for $70 after I exceeded 16 GB of bandwidth on a quite small video stream. They automatically charge this stuff to your invoice without notification. If you want a quality company I use Host Gator for hosting and Netfirms for domains. Host Gator ads bonuses to the Business plan every two months or so. They recently added the option of having your very own toll free "1-866" number. All together, I've never had a problem with them, and I've been through a ton of hosts.

If you ever leave 000, give it a shot - they have a 45 Day money back guarantee.

That's just my two cents. Hope this helps.

I'm sure that there is a possibility of having a bad experience with anyone. Since I've only had unlimited accounts, I've never had a bandwidth problem. Just one of my sites exceeds a Gig a day.

Don't go Just Host. They were a pain in the ass, as they are mostly incompetent fools.

Inmotion is good, network solutions, and 1&1 are all ones that I have worked with with clients in the past.

Before the days of unlimited bandwidth, GoDaddy was the biggest bandwidth thief. I still refuse to use their services from that experience, but also because I have a dislike for the CEO. Bob Parsons (GoDaddy CEO) tries to look good by donating money to groups like perverted-justice, but all he's doing is trying to cover up his own dirt. His old blog contained a number of slurs against women, Muslims, and the practices at Guantanamo Bay. Then he allows his marketing team to advertise his company with softcore pornography - and then tries calling himself a feminist? I think this deserves a thread of its own. Getting back on track, I heard Host Gator and a few other hosts might get together to start their own domain service, but the only details are mostly speculation.

Agreed. Just Host is another one of those copycat hosting companies that resells other people's web hosting. As far as I know, JustHost doesn't even lease dedicated servers from a higher company. Probably just a reseller of their own web hosting accounts using WHM.

This I did not know, that is very interesting. Hmm... I'm thinking about switching now... although I wonder how much of a hassle it would be with these guys. I mean I'm that afraid to tick them off. I've heard about hosting companies taking people's money. I badgered them forever about setting my stuff up and after a week they finally had it up. Their live tech support was retarded. If you ask them anything, all they do is tell you how to contact support or billing. I finally asked them one time what exactly I should use live support for and they completely ignored the question and said goodbye. With just host, my red flags are up everywhere.

I would also suggest GoDaddy. They are quite cheap and support everything you'll probably need, lots of space, lots of bandwidth, and 10 databases (frankly I don't know why you'd need more than one, but its nice to have), PHP or ASP.NET, and other stuff. They haven't steered me wrong so far, but then I don't do any media-heavy sites (only external video streams, jpegs and such).

Honestly I'd suggest Dreamhost. Been with them for 3 or 4 years and they host 13 of my domains. I have unlimited space, bandwidth, domains, and it supports PHP, MySQL, and a lots of things here and there. It's $197 for 2 years last I checked.

13? Geesh. Lol.

I will never purchase from GoDaddy. They might be a great company, but I will not support a business that uses sex to sell their products. Their commercials disgust me. Just my standard.

I've had to contact Fastdomain a few times in the past and have been able to get issues resolved quickly with them. I don't really have anything bad to say about them after a year and a half.

I guess there will be no fast cars, beer, aftershave lotion, shaving razors, deodorant, toothpaste, clothes, soft drinks, diet food, or thousands of other products in your life. Shame. LOL

There's a difference between those things and how GoDaddy goes out of it's way to be blatantly vulgar, sexist and crude and use middle school locker room jokes to try and win customers. If you are impressed by those things, then power to you. They are needlessly provocative and many people have left GoDaddy because of it.

I don't understand the marketing concept. The goal when advertising your product is to reach as many people as you can so you can spread your message. Why annoy a large consumer base by advertising like that? Seems stupid to me. Of course they might attract half-brained jocks who mistakenly sign up for GoDaddy thinking it was a pr0n site. But hey...

I don't enjoy those types of sexual jabs in any sort of form. So I guess your cute remark has some merit to it, even if it was missing the mark. Yes, many things use sex to sell. Maybe not as blatant as GoDaddy, but it's still annoying. Take the new Transformers movie for instance. That little Megan Fox stunt on the motorcycle was over the top and was put in there purely for eye candy. It was unnecessary. What did it add to the story? Nothing. Did I know it was in there? Yes. Did I still go and see it? Yes. Did it affect my opinion about the movie? No. Is it one of my fav movies? Yes.

I don't enjoy being a tool. I don't enjoy be targeted. It's sexist towards females and it's an insult to me. Maybe I speak for myself here, but do they really think we (guys) have no brains are just functioning on earth as sexual beings?

It's all opinion. Sex sells and almost everyone uses it. It's the nature of the beast. If one of the companies that uses it gets under your skin, by all means don't patronize them. It's free will, and if enough people stop using that company, they will change their ways. Guaranteed.

I have emailed Pepsico a few times to let them know how I feel about them using my money to promote gay pride and same-sex marriage. I have stopped buying Pepsi every day. I really miss it. We do what we feel we must do.

But back to GoDaddy. Look it up if you wish, of take my word for it, they are not loosing customers - they are gaining them. If and when they start loosing them, they will change their ways. Until then, they will continue to do what has been done since the advertising was invented. Use sex to sell. Wikipedia has a little history on it.

Yes, it was a cute remark, but only because it seems that you are singling out GoDaddy for doing something that everybody does. I guess you have to start your resistance somewhere, and best to start with something that you don't really need, right?

Everything we see in the media is a reflection of our society. It's not the companies fault sex works in advertising. If sex didn't sell the internet would be only be 10% porn... not the 90% it actually is.

Remember the One Laptop Per Child program? The first time they gave them to some kids in Nigeria the kids learned how to find and download porn all by themselves. It's part of human nature and not a slimy tactic of corporations... it's just the way we are.

@xplosys: I agree with your post What I meant about GoDaddy losing customers is not that they are diminishing, but that they no longer have a customer that they would have had otherwise. Bad marketing IMO.

Quote: "Everything we see in the media is a reflection of our society. It's not the companies fault sex works in advertising."

I see where you are coming from, and partly agree, but I think there is another side to it as well. I do agree that the media reflects society/culture, but I also think the media plays off of our human nature (both good and bad). Sometimes yes, what they do/say is mirroring what society has done. But at other times, I think the media is pioneering something that targets us psychologically by playing off our nature. Like sex ads. Guys are visually oriented. What better way to get a guy's engine running a little hot than to use sex in your ad? Of course the byproduct of that is that it portrays women in a way that puts an impression on real women making them think I should look this way or act suggestively like this to win a guy.

Assuming that men will fall for sexy commercials and sign up simply because there's a woman in the ad is just as bad an insult as the commercials themselves.

Advertisers continuously make men look stupid in commercial advertising. Men are always the ones making the stupid comment, acting like children, and being general idiots compared to their smartly portrayed wives, girlfriends, etc. That irritates me in so many ways.

I can't believe no one said Dreamhost. They have an ongoing promo where you get one year for $20. There is no reason not to do it.

Media Temple is considered one of the best ones though.

I've been using www.streamlinenet.co.uk for the last 6 years. Their techinical support is quick, I've had no down time that wasn't my fault (opps), they give good value for money. Their backend system is first rate.

I always thought GoDaddy was a porn website until I read this thread. I guess they advertise using sex a little too much. Or maybe little is an understatement.

Oh, didn't know that. Well here is one from a few years ago:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVQUvepHW_w - You can remove this link if you deem it inappropriate later.

I won't be their customer, I said that above. And then people replied, so I had to reply back to them
