Very, very nice models fuzz

Honestly, there's a wonderful program you can use that's really easy.
http://www.unwrap3d.com/u3d/index.aspx

The demo version has all the features except being able to save, so you'd have to do it in one sitting or leave it running.
But you should be able to do it pretty quickly with this.
For the most part it should keep all of your textures from MAX as well, so you can preview the model in the program and see how it will show when applied using the UV (When you move the parts around the texture scrolls so make sure it's alligned properly)

Give it a shot and if you need help with that program let me know.

Blender also does it, but is free! There's a demo movie linked from that page where it talks about the features.

Here is the tutorial. It says in the tutorial you also need Gimp or Photoshop to coordinate; Gimp is also free!

Your error is my treasure. =^--^=

I've found some UV mapping things in the modifier list, do you know of any tutorials or could you help me use it?

Thanks, I currently use Gimp.

Also, when I click select and move, for some reason the red, blue and green arrows have disappeared and it's extremely difficult to do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Here's a decent tutorial.
I love max's UVW unwraper, it's really simple yet powerful.

In 3dsmax you can auto unwrap,no work needed, simply go to Render-Render to texture and select unwrap only, then on the right side you will see unwrap, before you click it set teh uvmap channel to 1,now click unwrap and render your uv template and enjoy.

If you want the model to be easy to texture i would advise against using the automatic unwrap. Its ok for simple models but anything more than a box i kind of frown on lol.

If you are still having problems i can see if i still have a screen recorder on my pc and do a quick tutorial

Automatic unwrap is one of the best things 3dsmax has,you must just use it smartly.Like henry said press X and it will come back.

I respectfully disagree, after i get back from my exam today ill record a video of my mapping proccess and post it up. Max's automatic mapper is highly inefficient and leaves a texture that is less then disireable. Its better than no map at all but only just.

It is debate-able, depending a the type of model you're working with. Sometimes it produces good results, other times it struggles, which is why someone should use all the available tools max has to unmap.

Begginers should stick to auto unwrappers until they are experienced enough to go advanced.I almost killed myself when I made an awesome model then I couldnt uvmap.

That is definitely far from the truth, auto-unwrappers do an awful job at making proper UV maps, if you make an advanced model you should definitely try to learn how to UV map it properly.

Well have a video being uploaded to Veoh and ill edit it in when its done. i sound terrible in it and i swear i sound like im 10 in it but meh its good enough.

I still dont agree with that, if you are using the cheap way to unwrap then you have to use the cheap way to texture and then you dont learn either.

If you finish a model and realize oh i dont know how to do this you start teaching yourself how.

You start off with a crappy model with a sloppy uv map and a messy texture and you work forward from there. As you model more and more your models start getting better, your maps become more coherent and your textures hit a higher quality. You learn more with every model and pick up what does and doesnt work. You should see some of the crap i hve modeled.

If you looked at my models 2 years ago and how proud i was of them you would have laughed your self right off your chair. Now im in no way Jon Fletcher or any other exceedingly good artist but every day is a little more that i pick up.

wow lol that got a little ranty didnt it

Well you could always spend the time learning how to use the auto-unwrap tool to actually learn how to properly unwrap things, it's far superior no matter how well you can optimize automatic processes.

I agree with Alucard, auto unwrap is generally a bad idea.

hey, i have never used auto unwrap and i neither intent to, i belive u get more control by doing it from the start=P sure auto unwrap might be easier, but its better to learn to unwrap manually as soon as possible =P
