Hello all,

I am new to modeling and want to know what you modelers think of Milkshape 3d the fully registered product? I was also looking at buying the book Hands on Milkshape 3d any thoughts. Thank you for your input. Looking at making models primarily for FPSC. I have searched the forums but would still like to know if any of you are using Milkshape 3d.

Regards

Milkshape is perfect for FPSC and very easy to understand, i don't think you will need the hands on book rather post questions here in the forum ill try to help you as much of my ability. Its splendid, i use it and i am very very happy with it. But if you are kind of greedy on money maybe you should go and take a look at blender, which is a much more power full tool, and its free. Try the 30 day free trail and mess around with it!

For model i recomend you anim8or.. if you like see somes examples in 3dimensional chat..
look this model.. modeled in anim8or, export to 3ds, and import to milkshape and animated.

I agree with Neodelito, modeling in MS3D is easy but yet hard to get anything to look real good. A good cheap program I would recommend would be AC3D for modeling but MS3D is a good animation and model conversion pipeline. Anim8or is free I think but not sure and have yet to try it so I cant say much about it.

I highly reccomend Milkshape 3d especially for beginners. You can definitely get a model to look good in it; it's all up to the artist and how much work you put into it. For the price, I swear by it. It's all a matter of preference.

Another to keep your eye on is Blender 2.5 when it has a final stable version out I think in March. Nothing better for the money (free) and its a ton easier to use then 2.49 which in my opinion was just to unorganized to get a proper work flow going. MilkShape is a great investment no matter what. I use it for converting models to different formats but thats about it. It seams to have the only .X converter that works every time.

ms3d is excellent for low poly models that is not way to complicated=P it is a great introduction to the 3D world. I say use Ms3d. Then when u feel that u've got a grip around the whole 3d thing, move on to AC3D, 3DS max, blender whatsoever=P also the price for what ms3d offers isnt expensive really=P

As said, Milkshape is an excellent tool for low-poly models, especially when you're learning, although it does lack some advanced features you might use down the road.

For example, Milkshape only works with triangles, whereas with some models it's much easier to work with quads or other types of polygons. Obviously you can represent any type of polygon with a number of triangles, but it can lead to things appearing more "busy" than they need to be.

Milkshape also lacks a decent UV mapper. The default one is fine for really simple models, but for advanced character models, you'll find the default UV mapper lacking. Fortunately, Milkshape does have a vast number of import and exports. What I do is model in Milkshape, use LithUnwrap (do a forum search on it, it's an excellent free to use UV mapper) to unwrap the model, then import the uv map from Milkshape.

All in all, definitely a good tool to learn with. If you can learn Blender, you may prefer that, as it's completely free and has a few more advanced features, but from what I've heard it's harder to learn with than Milkshape is.

I would recommend Wings 3D. Very easy for beginners! Once you get a grip on that try anim8or.
